Body of Chin refugee man recovered from Tlawng River

1 June 2026 – The body of Mr. Tha Cung Lian, a 36-year-old Chin man originally from Tlangkhua village, Thantlang township, Chin State, was recovered from Tlawng River in Aizawl, Mizoram State, India, on the morning of 31 May after he was reported missing following an accidental fall into the river.

According to reports, Mr. Tha Cung Lian fell into the river while setting fishing nets with a friend on 29 May. Following the incident, volunteers from the Khatla Branch YMA (Young Mizo Association), Carson Baptist Church (CBC) youth members, residents from nearby localities, and the Central YMA Disaster Response Team (CYMA DRT) joined search efforts.

The search continued through the night and the following day. His body was eventually found at approximately 1:05-1:30 am on 31 May, not far from the location where he had fallen into the river.

After recovery, his remains were taken to Khatla Ward, Aizawl, where he had been residing, before being transported to his native village of Tlangkhua in Thantlang township for burial. Mr. Tha Cung Lian is survived by his wife and two children. – Reporting by Daniel
