16 June 2026 – The Government of India has begun preparations to distribute more than 1,291 metric tons of rice, valued at Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million), to refugees sheltering across Mizoram State.
Mizoram Home Secretary Vanlalmawia said that district authorities are making arrangements to distribute the rice free of charge to refugees in their respective areas.
According to officials, distribution in Siaha District was scheduled to begin last Friday, while Lawngtlai District plans to start distribution next Tuesday.
In Kolasib District, Deputy Commissioner H. Dotinbuaia said authorities are still verifying the number of refugees in the district. He noted that some displaced persons from Manipur are preparing to return home, making it necessary to reassess beneficiary figures before distribution.
Authorities had recently arranged transportation for those wishing to return to Churachandpur, Manipur, although the initiative was later suspended.
The rice allocation will be distributed among Mizoram’s districts based on the number of refugees residing in each area.
This is the second time such an assistance package was given from the Government of India. In 2024, the central government also provided rice worth Rs 5 crore to support refugees taking shelter in Mizoram. – Reporting by Ben
