FALAM, Chin State – 6 June 2026 – A tragic landmine explosion has claimed the life of a 53-year-old civilian in Zalai village, Falam township, underscoring the growing and hazardous threat posed by explosive remnants of conflict to residents in the region.
The victim, identified as Mr. Hrang No Lung, was fatally injured on 5 June 2026, while performing routine maintenance on the grounds surrounding his home. According to local reports, he triggered a landmine—allegedly planted by the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military—while he was clearing weeds from his property.
A partner of the Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO) confirmed the details of the incident, noting that the death highlights the persistent and indiscriminate danger landmines pose to civilians as they attempt to return to their communities and resume daily agricultural and domestic activities.
Local media outlets have reported an alarming proliferation of landmines across Falam township. Intelligence from the area suggests that SSPC forces have extensively mined critical infrastructure, including public roads, footpaths, and agricultural routes frequently utilized by local villagers.
The incident has prompted urgent safety warnings from community leaders and local media organizations. Residents are being strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and to avoid entering farms, plantations, and forested areas until the threat can be neutralized. — Reporting by Daniel
