Man dies after lightning strike while taking shelter from storm in Mindat

5 June 2026 – Mr. Maung Shin Mang died instantly after being struck by lightning during a storm in Mindat township, Chin State, on 4 June.

Local sources said that the victim was taking shelter under a house during heavy rain and thunderstorms when the lightning strike occurred around 1:00 pm in Khwee Rin village, located in Circle 2 area of Mindat township.

He was identified as a young man from Hli Rung village in Circle 1 area of Mindat township. The lightning strike also damaged nearby structures, including splitting parts of two wooden house pillars.

According to Zalen News, a resident villager said: “He came to take shelter at the house. His whole body was wet from the rain. That’s when he was struck. He collapsed immediately. We tried to help him, brought him inside, lit a fire, and applied traditional remedies, but we could not save him.”

At the time of the incident, many villagers were away attending a local event, leaving only a few people in the village, which delayed immediate assistance.

Residents also reported that Khwee Rin village had already experienced two lightning strikes on 3 June, which caused minor damage but no casualties. – Reporting by Ben
