9 June 2026 – Heavy fighting has intensified along the Kalay-Tamu Asian Highway as State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military forces launch a major operation to regain control of the strategic route.
According to local sources, the SSPC military is advancing with three columns from Kalay, Tamu, and Mawlaik towns, leading to clashes with local resistance alliance forces.
Since 8 June, fighting around Khampat town and surrounding areas has forced residents from more than 50 villages along the highway to flee. Local reports estimate that tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced.
Many displaced people attempted to seek refuge in India’s Manipur State but were reportedly prevented from crossing the border by Indian authorities. As a result, large numbers of civilians are said to be stranded near the border without adequate shelter, food, medicine, or other basic necessities, creating an urgent humanitarian situation.
A local defense source cited by local media reported that SSPC military forces suffered significant casualties during clashes on 8 June. The source also stated that resistance forces temporarily withdrew from Nan Mun Tar (Lallim) village as part of a defensive strategy.
Ongoing military operations and artillery shelling are reportedly causing further displacement and increasing the need for humanitarian assistance in the area. – Reporting by Daniel
