9 June 2026 – A routine motorcycle journey between Hakha and Kalay towns turned into a tense confrontation on 8 June 2026, after a local Chin woman narrowly avoided what she alleges was a calculated attempt by State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) personnel to plant incriminating evidence in her vehicle.

According to reliable local reports, the incident occurred at an SSPC military checkpoint on the Hakha-Falam road. The commuter, who was wearing a face mask at the time, was mistaken for a man by the checkpoint guards.

As the inspection unfolded, one of the SSPC personnel was observed attempting to secretly place a live bullet cartridge into the toolbox compartment of the woman’s motorcycle—a common tactic frequently used to manufacture grounds for arbitrary arrest and prosecution.

The woman, noticing the clandestine move, immediately challenged the soldier. The ensuing confrontation led to a heated argument, during which the traveler stood her ground against the personnel. Following the dispute, the SSPC security personnel allowed her to proceed without further incident.

A pattern of harassment

This incident highlights an escalating trend of intimidation faced by civilians traveling through the Kalay-Falam-Hakha road corridor. Local travelers have frequently reported severe harassment, threats, and aggressive, invasive inspections at the approximately 20 SSPC checkpoints established along the route.

The atmosphere of fear is compounded by a significant military presence in the region. Residents estimate that the SSPC has deployed roughly 3,000 personnel throughout Falam township and the surrounding road corridor.

Wider conflict context

The incident occurs against a backdrop of intensifying conflict across Chin State. Recent reports from local media indicate that the SSPC’s military campaign is multifaceted and increasingly volatile. Beyond the harassment at checkpoints, the region has been subjected to severe airstrikes and bombings, which have led to civilian casualties and the destruction of homes.

In surrounding areas such as Saw and Kyaukhtu, residents report looting by military columns, while resistance activities by the Chin Defence Force (CDF-Asho) and allied groups continue to target SSPC logistics, further destabilizing the region and placing immense pressure on the civilian population. – Reporting by Daniel
