4 May 2026 – A surveillance drone operated by the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) was observed flying over villages in Kyaukhtu township on 4 May, according to local sources.

Local media outlet, Yaw Atlinn Tan, reported that the drone hovered over areas near Kan Gyi village and surrounding forested areas at around 11:00 am, conducting aerial reconnaissance.

Sources added that such drone activity is often followed by airstrikes, raising concern among residents.

The development comes amid an ongoing military buildup in the area. A column of approximately 200 troops from Infantry Battalion 368, based in Kyaukhtu town, has been stationed near Kan Gyi village since 25 April. The troops have reportedly remained at a junction about one mile from the village for over a week.

SSPC forces are said to be digging trenches and establishing defensive positions around the village school and nearby high ground. Patrols have also intensified, with sentry posts set up near the village bridge and surrounding areas, including near Pyin Lel village.

The military presence has forced residents from Kan Gyi and nearby villages to flee, with troops reportedly occupying civilian homes along the main road. Displaced families are facing hardships due to ongoing rainfall and limited shelter.

On the night of 3 May, a reconnaissance drone was also seen circling the area for about an hour, further heightening fears of possible surveillance or impending airstrikes.

Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain alert, take precautionary measures, and be prepared to move to safer locations if the situation worsens. – Reporting by Ben
