1 July 2026 – A displaced resident from Gelmual village, Thang Lam Khup, was allegedly detained and killed by members of the Zomi Revolutionary Army-Eastern Command (ZRA-EC) on 29 June 2026, according to local reports and the Chinland Defence Force-Tonzang (CDF-Tonzang) Supporters Group.
The incident occurred in Phuntong village, where Mr. Khup had been seeking refuge after fleeing conflict in Tonzang town. According to witnesses and local sources, ZRA-EC forces entered Phuntong on 29 June to conduct an operation, during which they seized Starlink internet equipment—a critical lifeline for residents in the conflict-affected region.
During the sweep, Mr. Khup was detained without clear justification. Sources report that he was subjected to severe physical abuse while being transported toward Tonzang town. His body was later discovered near Mawngmual hill, indicating that he was killed before the unit reached the township center.
The killing underscores a rapidly deteriorating human rights climate in Tonzang township. Since 19 May 2026, the area has been under the administrative control of forces aligned with the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military and the ZRA-EC.
Local observers have consistently characterized this tenure by a pattern of civilian abuses, including forced detentions, extrajudicial violence, and the targeted confiscation of communication technology.
The removal of internet infrastructure in Phuntong and other areas has worsened the isolation of the local population. By severing access to independent communication channels, these forces have significantly hindered efforts by aid groups and local media to document incidents of violence, creating an environment of limited accountability.
As of the time of reporting, neither the ZRA-EC nor the SSPC military has released an official statement regarding the allegations of Mr. Khup’s death. The exact circumstances of his arrest and the full extent of his injuries remain subject to further investigation, though the combination of severed communications and regional insecurity continues to challenge independent verification. – Reporting by Daniel
