23 June 2026 – Khampat town and neighboring Kanan village, Tamu township, Sagaing Region, located along the Kalay-Tamu highway on the India-Myanmar border trade route, were subjected to repeated airstrikes by the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military on 21 and 22 June amid ongoing fighting in the area.
Local sources reported at least ten SSPC military airstrikes over two days. Despite a 20 June announcement of control, fighting persists in Ward No. 1 of the town as the SSPC military continues its 7 June 2026 offensive from Kalay and Tamu Road to retake Khampat town, which has been held by National Unity Government-allied (NUG) forces since 7 November 2023.
At around 1:00 pm on 22 June, SSPC military jet fighters bombed Kanan village, with the heaviest strikes reported in the village’s A and C sections. The attacks damaged or destroyed homes in both Kanan and Khampat and reportedly killed livestock.
During the strike, Mr. Lalpanmawia, a 34-year-old Mizo resident of Kanan village, was killed instantly. He was the youngest child of Mr. Hrangtawnga and Mrs. Tlani and a member of the village’s Methodist Church. As many residents had already fled the area, his body was recovered later in the day by a small group of villagers and buried at the Kanan village cemetery.
Throughout the day, local residents noted persistent firing in the vicinity of Kanan and Khampat.
In a separate incident on 21 June, local media reported that SSPC military soldiers killed a civilian upon entering Khampat town, though the victim’s identity remains unknown. – Reporting by Daniel
