22 June 2026 – A two-year-old child and the child’s mother were killed in a drone strike carried out by the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military in Kanpetlet township, Chin State late Sunday night.
The attack occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on 21 June near Kyauktaung village in Kanpetlet township, close to the border with Mindat township.
Local residents said a military drone dropped explosives on civilians sheltering in a farm hut where they stay after fleeing their homes due to ongoing fighting in the area.
According to local sources, the mother and her two-year-old child were killed in the strike, while three other civilians sustained injuries. Further details regarding the identities of the victims and the severity of the injuries were not immediately available.
The incident followed a series of reported aerial attacks in the area earlier the same day. At around 8:30 pm, a military jet fighter reportedly conducted two airstrikes east of Kanpetlet, dropping four bombs. Earlier, at approximately 5:00 pm, a Y-12 aircraft reportedly carried out around six bombing runs in Kanpetlet township.
Since mid-May, Myanmar military forces have been conducting a large-scale offensive in the Mindat–Kanpetlet area involving more than 2,000 troops, supported by drones, air power, and artillery.
Local sources said intense clashes between military forces and Chin resistance groups have continued, while airstrikes have been reported almost daily across parts of southern Chin State.
The latest attack highlights the growing risks faced by civilians displaced by the conflict, many of whom have sought refuge in remote farm huts and forested areas. – Reporting by Ben
