2 June 2026 — A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has blocked a major road connecting Gangaw Township in Magway Region with Rezua town in Matupi township, Chin State, disrupting transportation along one of the region’s most important road corridors, according to local sources.
The landslide occurred at the 46-mile section of the Gangaw–Aik Car road, part of the main route linking Gangaw and Rezua. The incident followed continuous heavy rainfall that began on the night of 30 May.
Salai Thomas, Road Maintenance Coordinator of the Zotung Federal Council, said that the ongoing rainfall and unstable ground conditions have delayed efforts to clear and repair the affected road section.
“The road has sustained significant damage due to the landslide. However, if the rain stops and weather conditions improve, we expect to clear the route and restore access by tomorrow,” he said.
The local community leading members said they would provide further updates once the road becomes passable. Travellers have been advised to postpone non-essential journeys until access is restored.
The affected road is a vital transportation link connecting southern and northern parts of Chin State, as well as the Lautu and Zophei areas, extending as far as Thantlang township.
The route plays a crucial role in the movement of passengers, trade, humanitarian assistance, and essential supplies between Chin State and central Myanmar.
The closure is expected to affect travel and the transport of goods across several parts of Chin State as the rainy season continues to bring heavy rainfall and an increased risk of landslides. – Reporting by Ben
