2015 general election to be free and fair: UEC Chairman

06 October 2015 — Tin Aye, chairman of the Union Election Commission, said in Hakha today that the upcoming November 8 general election would be free and fair.

He addressed a meeting held at the new Chin State government building, saying that the 2015 election would be different from the previous ones.

Arriving in the capital, Hakha, the 69-year-old retired lieutenant general met with leaders of political parties, government officials and Chin media.

Pu Sui, a Hakha community leader, said: “It will be great if the election is free and fair. But we are not sure how free and fair it will be until it is actually held.”

“People are still worried that it will be rigged. It has got to be well monitored,” added Sui, who attended the meeting.

Tin Aye also said, according to The Chinland Post, that he would be neutral and act in conformity with the law and that anyone caught getting involved in any illegal activities concerning the elections would be sent to jail.

There are 13 political parties and seven independent candidates contesting in Chin State this year.

Before his departure, the UEC Chairman visited parts of the town, devastated by landslides, and Mount Rung.#
