7 July 2026 — Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a fresh landslide along the Gangaw–Aikha Road in Chin State, disrupting traffic on a key transport route linking northern and southern parts of Chin State, according to the Zotung Federal Council.
The council said the landslide occurred at Mile 46 in the Zotung area of Matupi township. Ongoing rainfall has delayed clearance operations, with road repair work expected to begin around 8 July if weather conditions improve.
Local leaders have advised travelers to postpone or carefully plan their journeys until the road is reopened.
The Gangaw–Aikha Road is a vital transport corridor used by local residents, humanitarian organizations, and commercial vehicles. The closure is expected to disrupt the movement of people, goods, and humanitarian assistance across the region.
The Zotung Federal Council noted that the road network sustained extensive damage during the 2025 monsoon season. Repair work began in February 2026 and took more than four months to complete, costing over 200 million kyats.
The council also warned that continued heavy rainfall could trigger further landslides and urged the public to follow official travel advisories and exercise caution. – Reporting by Ben
