16 June 2026 – Tensions have reached a critical point following the reported execution of a local resident by the Zomi Revolutionary Army-Eastern Command (ZRA-EC), marking a significant escalation in the conflict between local armed groups.
The ZRA-EC, a faction operating in the Tedim and Tonzang townships, officially announced on 14 June that it had executed Mr. Kap Lian Mang, a young resident of Tuithang village. The group stated that Mr. Mang was arrested during an investigation into the 9 June assassination of Mr. Pau Ngaih Mang, a National Worker within the ZRA-EC’s Department of Home Affairs.
According to reports, Mr. Pau Ngaih Mang was killed while traveling home to Tedim township after a visit to Tonzang. His death prompted an immediate and lethal response from the ZRA-EC, which categorized the execution of Mr. Kap Lian Mang as the implementation of the ‘highest punishment’ under its internal regulations.
Local community leaders confirmed they were contacted by ZRA-EC officials to retrieve Mr. Mang’s body from Tonzang, verifying the fatality.
The incident underscores a worsening power struggle between the ZRA-EC and the newly emerged Zomi National Army (ZNA), a group described as a splinter faction. The ZRA-EC has publicly accused the ZNA of orchestrating the killing of its member, asserting that the ZNA’s actions have ‘broken the peace’ first.
In its 14 June statement, the ZRA-EC reiterated a hardline policy stating that there should only be one recognized armed organization operating within the Zomi-inhabited territories, signaling further potential conflict with emerging groups.
In a direct counter-statement issued on the same day, the ZNA denied any involvement in the assassination of Mr. Pau Ngaih Mang, labeling the ZRA-EC’s accusations as entirely unfounded.
The instability in the region is further complicated by the ZRA-EC’s reported strategic alignment with the ruling military regime.
According to local reports, the ZRA-EC has been collaborating with military forces, including in the occupation of Tonzang township on 19 May. There are ongoing indications that the ZRA-EC is engaging in negotiations with the junta to solidify its status, potentially operating as a border guard force or a state-sanctioned militia in Tedim, Tonzang, and Cikha regions.
This execution represents a deepening of the factional violence that continues to disrupt security in northern parts of Chin State. As the ZRA-EC has vowed to continue taking ‘effective measures’ against the ZNA and its affiliates, observers fear a prolonged period of instability that will further impact the civilian population already grappling with the broader conflict in the region. – Reporting by Daniel
