28 May 2026 – The State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC)-backed Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), sometimes identified as ZRA-EC, is actively working to establish administrative control in Tonzang town, Chin State, following its recapture by the military.
According to local sources, the ZRA is holding a series of meetings with ward and village administrative groups, as well as non-Civil Disobedience Movement (non-CDM) civil servants, under the stated aim of reopening local schools and hospitals.
The effort to consolidate control comes after the SSPC military regained Tonzang, a key location previously held by Chin resistance alliance forces since May 2024.
The military operation to retake the town began around 12 May 2026, as a major joint offensive involving an estimated 800 combined troops from the SSPC and the ZRA.
The Myanmar military council has previously been reported to supply the ZRA with weapons to support its efforts to retake Tonzang and prepare for a potential election.
The military’s narrative, broadcast by state-run MRTV, highlights ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction in Tonzang. Propaganda reports claim construction materials and supplies—including consumer goods, kitchen, and medical supplies—were transported to Tonzang and Tedim townships on 23 May.
This push to reopen schools and re-establish administration in Tonzang aligns with the SSPC’s broader strategy across Chin State, which includes intensified military operations—such as heavy Y-12 airstrikes on Kanpetlet and a massive air assault on resistance-held Matupi—and efforts to force the reopening of basic education schools in Falam town.
These military actions have resulted in the widespread destruction of civilian houses and forced displacement across multiple townships. – Reporting by Daniel
