14 May 2026 – Two State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military personnel, including Deputy Warrant Officer Mr. Aung Kyaw Zaw, was killed by the Kalay Urban Guerrilla (UG) force during an operation in Kalay town, Sagaing Region.
The incident took place on 12 May in the Hlaingtharya Ward industrial zone area while UG members were conducting a security patrol. The group said it intercepted two men traveling by motorcycle and identified them as SSPC personnel stationed at a SSPC military base inside Kalay University near the 8-Mile area.
According to the UG, the two men, Mr. Aung Kyaw Zaw and another soldier from a regional military logistics unit, were allegedly involved in extorting money from travelers and forcibly recruiting or threatening local youths at checkpoints near Kalay University.
The group said both men were shot dead at the scene after it became impossible to detain and transport them.
The UG stated that no weapons were recovered, but mobile phones, cash, and personal belongings were seized, while the motorcycle used by the two men was destroyed.
The group also warned residents to avoid SSPC-controlled areas and checkpoints in Kalay town due to the risk of further armed clashes and shootings. – Reporting by Daniel
