17 April 2026 – Malaysian authorities have deported 50 Myanmar nationals detained for immigration offences, repatriating them on 15 April via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The group, held by the Kedah State Immigration Department, comprised 28 men, 21 women and one child. They were returned to Myanmar after legal proceedings for unlawful stay, and all have been permanently blacklisted from re-entering Malaysia.

The deportation is part of Malaysia’s ongoing crackdown on irregular migration, which has intensified in recent years through increased raids, detentions and enforcement actions.

Myanmar nationals have been migrating in large numbers to Malaysia and other countries since the 2021 military takeover, seeking work and safety amid political turmoil, economic collapse and widespread conflict. Many face risks upon return, including possible forced conscription under the junta’s military service laws.

Human rights groups and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) have repeatedly raised concerns over deportations to Myanmar, citing the principle of non-refoulement and the dangers faced by returnees in a country still gripped by civil war and instability.

Malaysia, which is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, does not formally recognise refugee status granted by UNHCR. It continues deportations of undocumented migrants despite reports of arrests and detentions of Myanmar nationals, including ethnic minorities such as the Chin and Rohingya, in immigration raids.

In a related recent incident reported by Chinland Guardian, a Chin youth died while attempting the journey to Malaysia, highlighting the perilous routes many take in search of better opportunities.

The latest action underscores the challenges faced by Myanmar citizens abroad as neighbouring countries tighten border controls amid persistent outflows driven by insecurity at home.#
