12 February 2026— The Chin National Front (CNF) has dismissed the upcoming Union Parliament, formed after the recent military-led elections, as a “façade” intended only to prolong military rule.
In a statement released on the 79th anniversary of the Panglong Agreement today, the CNF labeled the elections as fraudulent. It asserted that the resulting parliament, including state and regional assemblies, would not represent the will of the people but would instead solidify military control.
The CNF drew a parallel between the current process and the former National Convention that led to the 2008 Constitution, which it claims institutionalized the military’s political power.
Reports indicate that the three-phase election saw most seats won by military-backed parties, with parliamentary sessions expected to commence in March.
The CNF reiterated its commitment to establishing a federal democratic union based on the spirit of the Panglong Agreement and the principle of bottom-up federalism.
It pledged to continue collaborating with allied revolutionary forces to create a political system free from military domination.
The group further stated that since the 2021 coup, the military has dismantled democratic governance and worsened the country’s social and economic crisis.
The CNF argues that ongoing airstrikes and arrests of civilians are proof that the planned parliament is designed to legitimize continued military control rather than promote genuine democracy. – Reporting by Ben
