25 November 2025 – The essential trade route connecting Paletwa township in Chin State, Myanmar, and Mizoram State, India, has officially reopened after a two-week closure implemented to contain a severe outbreak of diarrhoea.
The border crossing had been closed since 12 November to mitigate the spread of the illness, which had resulted in fatalities and infected several conflict-affected communities. The reopening yesterday permits traders and local residents to resume movement between the two sides.
A local community leader, speaking to the Chinland Guardian on condition of anonymity, confirmed the return to normalcy: “The diarrhoea outbreak is over, and the situation has stabilized. Traders are operating as usual, and the flow of goods has normalized. Both sides have officially resumed trade activities.”
Border traders reported that India permitted the reopening of the Paletwa–Mizoram route after the extended closure period. The route, which had been closed by the Mizoram State Government and the Arakan Army (AA) between 12 and 24 November, officially reopened on Monday, with traffic resuming today, 25 November, according to sources from the Development Media Group.
The reopening is significant for the region, particularly as hundreds of Chin residents in Paletwa township have sought shelter along the India-Myanmar border following the Arakan Army’s assumption of control over the area. – Reporting by Benjamin
