CHRO to provide vocational training for IDPs

20 November 2020 – The Chin Human Rights Organization is in full preparation for starting vocational training courses for internally displaced persons in Sami, Paletwa Township.

The three-month courses will include sewing, masonry, carpentry, knitting and embroidering, motorbike and boat repair, and vehicle driving, with some training providers from Matupi Township.

“We have been planning this for months but because of COVID-19 pandemic, we haven’t been able to start. As the situation is getting better, we are thinking to start with a small group of trainees, with COVID-19 prevention measures in place,” Deputy Project Manager Sang Uk Lian told the Chinland Guardian.

As part of the Twe Let project funded by LIFT and implemented in Chin State in partnership with IOM, CHRO works with local community-based organizations of youth and women across the State.

Pa Maung, CHRO focal person in Sami, said that he had informed concerned authorities of the plans and that the courses would be organized in accordance with their guidance at local levels.

“After the training, we aim to provide them with necessary support so that they can get a job using their skills or they can start their own income generating activities,” added Lian.

Over 3,000 IDPs who had fled the ongoing conflict in Paletwa Township between Tatmadaw and Arakan Army are currently taking shelter in Sami, about 90 miles away from Matupi town. – Reporting by Thawng Zel Thang
