Govt approve airport construction in Chin State

16 April 2015 — Burma’s parliament gave the green light to a proposal to build an airport in Chin State, the only one of the nation’s 14 states and regions without airline services.

The parliament recently approved a bill submitted by the Ministry of Transport, which requests 1billion kyats for construction of a domestic airport in the country’s western state bordering Bangladesh and India.

The new move came as a welcome surprise to Chin communities after years of attempts to get permission and support from the authorities.

So far, the site chosen for the construction is on Mount Surbung, about 10 miles away from Falam town.

The initial funding is for the years 2015-16 to start the project, according to sources.#
