ABC General Secretary to arrive in Chin State

09 December 2013: Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley, General Secretary of the American Baptist Churches, is expected to make his first visit to Chin State tomorrow.

He arrived in Kalaymyo of Sagaing Region today, having attended the Judson’s bicentennial celebrations held in Rangoon on 5-8 December 2013.

According to a pastor from Hakha, Medley will travel to Chin State tomorrow and spend a night in Falam town before continuing his journey to Hakha and Thantlang towns on Wednesday.

Rev. Dr. Chum Awi, former General Secretary of the Chin Baptist Convention (formerly Zomi Baptist Convention), said in his email that Medley’s trip was scheduled from 9 to 14 December.

A Baptist Chin from Hakha told the Chinland Guardian that about 50 members of each Baptist church in the town would prepare to greet Medley in a reception organized at the entrance of the capital.

No information is available as to when he would visit Khuasak, a village in Tedim Township where the first Chin converts in Chin State, Pau Suan and his wife Kham Ciang, Thuam Hang and his wife Dim Kho Cing, became Christian.

He is set to preach at the Hakha Baptist Church on Thursday.

During his speech at the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT) in Rangoon, he highlighted the democratic changes in Burma as a challenge to Baptists in the country, adding: “They have to be a ‘moral voice’ and to seek ‘democracy with peace and justice’.

He ended his speech by saying: “We still believe this: For you, the future is as bright as the promises of God.”#
