TIMELINE from June: post-coup situation updates on political developments in Chin State

25 June 2021 – In Falam township, the military troops in two Skat light trucks, estimated to be about 50, were seen leaving Kalay for Chin State and said to be spending a night in Khuaimual village. Residents said that the two trucks had already returned to Kalay.

In Hakha, two detainees charged with 505A were sentenced to a three-year imprisonment.

In Mindat, the military troops in plain clothes with guns were seen at several checkpoints on the roads leading to the town. Every person and vehicle were stopped, and their details were asked and recorded. Some of the passers-by were not allowed to wear a waterproof cover although it was raining.

In Sekanh village of Kalay township, Ngun Nei Mang, a Chin evangelist, and his younger brother (identified as Ko Cite) who were arrested on 22 June (see updates on 22 June below) were released. Witnesses said that there were traces of injuries as their faces were still stolen.

In Kalay, four detainees including three under the age of 18, who were arrested yesterday (see updates on 24 June below), were released.

In Kalay, dozens of residents braved COVID-19 to continue anti-junta protests, walking along the streets as they held flags, banners and placards, and chanted slogans.

In Hakha at about 10am, U Tin Wei, 40, deputy head of the Hakha Township GAD, died at the Hakha General Hospital from injuries in a car accident near the entrance to Hakha on the Hakha-Gangaw road. He was known to be one of the most active government staff that provided local information to the military council.

In Kalay, a dead body found by the roadside near a primary school in Taungphila Ward this morning was later identified as Kauh Kauh, a member of the Assembly of God Church. It was believed that he was murdered last night.

In Zawlsei of Mizoram State, temporary shelters are under construction for refugees from Myanmar.

COVID-19 updates:

  • Hakha: 152 tests; 27 positive cases (1 from Dawrhlun, 7 from Cawbuk, 2 from CCU, 1 from Pyidawta, 2 from Chin-Oo-Si and 14 from Dawrthar)
  • Hakha: Five solderis from LIB 266 based on Mount Rung and one policewoman are COVID-19 positive (Source: The Hakha Post)
  • Falam: Soldiers (estimated to be 15 but numbers cannot be confirmed) of LIB 268 based in Falam test positive of COVID-19.
  • Tedim: The town is placed on lockdown starting today until 1 July; youth volunteers guards entrances to the town checking people in and out.
  • Kalay: At least 20 dead bodies were buried. Shortages of oxygen cylinders are reported. 21 new cases were confirmed.
  • Rihkhawdar: A 12-day lockdown will start from 26 June 2021 to 9 July 2021. No vehicles or persons will be allowed to enter the Indian-Myanmar border town in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

24 June 2021 – In Falam, a military chopper was seen landing at about 8am this morning and taking off after a few minutes.

In Hakha, a ‘slogan’ protest was organized with anti-junta messages including:

  • Jail never imprisons freedom.
  • We always stand for freedom.
  • We don’t think twice for justice and freedom.

In Shet village of Mindat township at about 3:15pm, a 13-year-old boy, who was in Grade 7, died after having stepped on a landmine laid by the military while going to the farm.

Updates in Mindat: The military troops beefed up security check measures at different points on all roads leading to Mindat town. An eye-witness said that they checked everyone and took note of details including colour of clothes he wore, type and number of a motorbike and purpose of going out or in as they talked to what seemed to be their senior on phone while asking questions. The soldiers were in plain clothes and wearing shorts as all of them carried guns.

In Thantlang, the Chinland Defense Force informed residents not to go out after 9pm and not to gather in a group on the outskirts of the town.

Updates in Kanpetlet township by the Kanpetlet Red Cross Society: “In the villages, there is no one who can provide medical services. Even if they are planning to come to town, there are no medical staff and the hospital is not open. No medicines, no staff. Some families who are in urgent need of medical help contacted us and the next day, we managed to travel to villages that had contacted us and also to other nearby places. With the generosity and kind donation of individuals, we were able to give assistance to these villagers. As the rainy season has started, the roads have become rough. Our motorbikes broke down several times but we slowly moved on.”

In Kalay at about 8am, four family members (Thang Biak Lian, 17, Mang Kim Khual, 16, Thang Gin Hang, 14 and Uncle Suan Lam Khai, 27) were arrested at their home close to Seikkanthar bridge by soldiers from LIB 88 based near the Kalay airport. A witness said that they were still in bed when the military troops entered the house.

In Kalay, the body of Salai Ngun Nei Piang, 24, was found by the roadside in Taungphila Ward and the military said that Mai Nuam Za Thiang, 19, who was injured by a bullet in the leg, died from COVID-19.

In Kalay, dozens of residents took to the streets in continued protest against the military junta.

In Kalay, the formation of the Ranger Kalay Defend Force was announced, with the aims of fighting against the military council and of protesting civilians.

In Angteng village of Kalay township, residents found an explosive device buried on the main road leading to Chin State.

In Chin State, clashes between the Chinland Defence Forces (CDF) and Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) continued across a number of townships until early June and more than 20,000 people are currently hosted in over 100 displacement sites in five townships in Chin State, one in Magway and another in Sagaing regions. CHRO: Over 450 individuals have been arrested in Chin State since the military coup, of which an estimated 253 have been released. In Hakha alone, an estimated 288 persons have been arrested.

COVID-19 updates in Tonzang township as of today since the coup:

  • Cikha: 1,092 tests in total; 262 positive cases; 6 deaths; 211 discharged.
  • Tonzang: 1,221 tests in total; 279 positive cases; 9 deaths; 143 discharged.
  • Tonzang township total: 2,312 tests; 541 positive cases; 15 deaths; 354 discharged.
  • Today’s updates: 2 tests with no positive cases in Cikha; 164 tests with 33 positive cases. 6 in Cikha and 2 in Tonzang were discharged.
  • Kalay: At least 14 dead bodies were buried in a Christian cemetery; 17 deaths reported.
  • Falam: Cung Lian, 66, passed away. As of today, seven in Falam town and 9 in villages have died since the coup. 11 new cases were confirmed.
  • Tamu: 31 new cases were confirmed.
  • Hakha: 72 tests; 6 positive cases.
  • Thantlang: 40 tests; 10 positive cases. Villages on Vanzang tlang started restricting people from entering their places in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19.

23 June 2021 – In Kalay at about 9pm, the military troops shot Salai Ngun Nei Piang, 24, and Mai Nuam Za Thiang, 19, originally from Falam township, in Taungphila Ward. Salai Ngun Nei Piang died on the spot whereas Mai Nuam Za Thiang was hit in the leg by a bullet. She was arrested and taken away by the soldiers. The soldiers said that they had shot them because they didn’t stop the motorbike when they ordered them to do so.

In Tedim town, residents found four explosive devices in Leilum Ward, which were later removed and taken to a safe place.

In Hakha, the Generation Z protested in support of the People Defense Force in Mandalay and expressed their condolences.

In Paletwa, families of the five detainees said that they had not heard any updates on conditions of Aik Min, Aik Tun Min (company staff), Aik Tun Min (forestry dept staff), Aung Tun Soe and Ya Kyaw, and that they had not been allowed to see them since their arrests on 28 May when there were two explosions in the town.

In Kanpetlet township, hundreds of residents are still hiding in the jungle despite no major armed clashes in recent weeks. Some local volunteers managed to reach them and gave plastic covers. Photos of some IDPs, especially elderly, taking shelter in a jungle using banana leaves.

In Mindat, the Chinland Defense Force and the military council struck a five-point deal:

  1. No weapons to be used in the township
  2. No pressure, threats and banning on CDMers
  3. No threats to civilians and no circulation of untruthful news and information
  4. No stopping and checking of motorbikes and persons on the Kyaukhtu-Mindat-Matupi road
  5. Cars carrying humanitarian aid may be checked but will be allowed to pass with prior notice made to responsible persons.

In Kalay, residents took to the streets continuing anti-junta protests as they took COVID-19 preventive measures including wearing masks and using hand sanitizers.

In Kalay, residents said that they saw a military chopper heading towards Chin State.

In Ramthlo village of Falam township, the military troops, estimated to be about 100 with some on foot and others in five military trucks, were seen arriving in the village near a junction to roads leading Falam and towards Camp Victoria of the Chin National Front via Khualhring tlang. COVID-19 updates:

  • In Falam town, a ‘stay-at-home’ restriction is imposed starting today until 30 June owing to a surge in new cases of COVID-19 and the number of fatalities. All shops and markets are closed. As of today since the military coup, eight deaths have been recorded, with four males and four females.
  • In Paletwa township, schools closed due to COVID-19 started to re-open today.
  • In Tedim town, 10 tests; 5 positive cases.
  • In Tonzang township, Cikha: 90 tests; 18 positive cases; 3 discharged. Tonzang: 158 tests; 12 positive cases; 6 discharged. 1 death at the Tonzang General Hospital.

22 June 2021 – In Thantlang and Hakha at about 8:30am this morning, a military chopper was seen landing and taking off after a few minutes of unloading unknown stuff. In Mindat town atbout 3pm, Thang Hnin, who was arrested on 15 April, was released.

In Mindat township, the negotiation between the Chinland Defense Force and the Tatmadaw seemed to be resulting positively. However, the majority of IDPs said that they would keep staying in the current hiding places, not willing to return to their homes yet, as they couldn’t trust the military council.

In Hakha, seven construction workers and truck drivers, who were going towards Thantlang, were arrested. On a separate occasion, two young individuals who were coming back from their work in Tikhir village, were also arrested. All of them were later released at about 10pm.

In Kalay at about 3pm, residents saw two military trucks and three smaller cars full of soldiers leaving for Chin State. At about 8am, a military chopper was seen flying towards Chin State.

In Kalay, dozens of residents continued anti-coup protests.

In Sekanh village of Kalay township, Ngun Nei Mang, a Chin evangelist, and his younger brother (identified as Ko Cite) were arrested and taken away in a military truck by the soldiers. Soon after, about 25 soldiers were seen walking towards Chin State.

In Tamu at about 9pm, the military troops were seen walking towards Chaungnatkyi village.

COVID-19 updates:

  • Thantlang: 40 tests; 3 new cases; 10 being isolated from previous confirmation.
  • Hakha: 48 tests; 8 new cases at Carson Hall; another 2 at General Hospital (12 confirmed in total today).
  • Kalay: 61 tests; 21 new cases; 5 deaths; 1 death suspected of COVID-19 but not confirmed. In Taungphila Ward, Rev. Thian Khaw Tiam, 81, and wife, 72, died. Rev. Tial Cung, 73, passed away at about 11am.
  • Falam: Salai Lal Eng Lian, 25, died from COVID-19. In June alone, there have been 129 positive cases and currently 71 are being isolated. In total, eight deaths have been recorded.

21 June 2021 – In Matupi, Salai Peter who was arrested on 16 June was released (see updates on 16 June).

In Falam township, the military troops in nine trucks just left Falam for Hakha. Residents said they heard gunshots near the junction to Rih on the Falam-Hakha road. In Paletwa town, a new set of requirements imposed by the SAC forces local traders and business people to submit a list of goods they would like to buy to the municipal department. Without the approval letter from the concerned authorities, traders are not allowed to pass the security checkpoints. Traders are required to present full name, age, phone number, ethnicity as well as identity card.

In Falam, a one-month commemoration of the death of Salai Cung Nawl Piang, a CNDF member who was killed during an armed clash between the Chin National Defense Force and the military troops near Lumbang on 21 May was held.

In Yangon, IDPs from Paletwa township, estimated to be of 50 households including about 40 students, currently taking shelter in Hmawbi and Hleku areas are still facing challenges. The groups eventually ended up in Yangon after the armed conflict between Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army had taken place since 2015.

In Tedim township, youths staged an anti-regime protest in the paddy fields.

In Tuphei village of Falam township, the military troops, estimated to be around 200, were believed to have spent a night or two in a school reportedly on , killed domestic animals (chickens and ducks), cooked and ate them, broke in houses, vandalized property and looted belongings in the village.

In Mizoram State of India, Robert Romawia Royte, Mizoram State Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Tourism and Information and Communication Technology, and families provided humanitarian aid for refugees currently taking shelter in Champhai District.

In Hakha at about 9am, about 60 soldiers were seen walking near Chuncung village.

Updates on COVID-19:

  • In Hakha, Rev. Evan Biak Lian Sum, 47, originally from Sim Dihai village in Falam township, died from COVID-19 at about 9am. He is survived by his wife and three children.
  • In Falam, the Falam Baptist Association announced that its office would be closed from 22 June 2021 until further notice because of COVID-19 pandemic. Pi Lun Khaw Niang, 76, died from COVID-19. Today’s check updates: 20 tests; 15 new cases. The Falam Christian Ministers Fellowship issued a public notice requesting residents in the town to make necessary preparation on 21 and 22 June, as a mini-lockdown measure will be imposed from 23 to 30 June in an effort to curb the spread of COVID.
  • In Tedim, 45 new cases (27 males and 25 females) of COVID-19 were confirmed out of 101 individuals tested.
  • In Thantlang, Hmun Lal, 69, died from COVID-19.

20 June 2021 – The town leaders who speak on behalf of the Chinland Defense Force and the military council called a truce today between 20 June and 4 July.

In Hakha, a dental doctor (Dr. Moe Kyaw Aung) and two school teachers (Sayama Dawt Tial and her sister Sayama Par Tha Dim), who were arrested at their houses yesterday, were released at about 7:30pm today. Three of them are CDMers.

In Hakha at about 2:30pm, the military troops stopped and thoroughly checked residents passing the junction to the General Hospital and at BOC near Innwa Bank. No arrests were reported.

In Falam township, the military troops, believed to be around 200, in eight trucks followed by one minibus and one sedan car are seen leaving Vaar bridge for Falam town minutes ago. Some gunshots were heard along the way.

In Falam, 69 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, of which 15 patients were in urgent need of oxygen cylinders.

In Kalay, the People’s Defence Force (Kalay) issued a statement saying that they were not responsible for the killing of four family members in Nyaungpintha Ward at night and that eye-witnesses said the terrorist military council members raided the house of U Win Zaw at about 8:30pm.

In Mrauk-Oo town of Rakhine State, the Mro University Students Association (MUSA) organized a meeting in Myothit Ward and managed to form the sub-committee of the organization.

The Chinland Defense Force issued a statement condemning the intentional attacks of the Zomi Revolution Army (ZRA) on members of the Zomi Federal Union (People Defense Force, Zoland).

In Mindat township as updated by the Mindat Emergency Response Team (MERT):

  • A discussion between the Chinland Defense Force and the military council’s forces reached a truce for 14 days.
  • Challenges for IDPs to return home because of lack of trust in the military council.
  • The military council started taking details of residents returning to their homes in Mindat town.
  • IDPs, especially children and elderly, suffer from flu, diarrhea, and malaria.
  • Soldiers continue looting and pillaging from houses in the town.
  • Soldiers block roads preventing vehicles carrying humanitarian aid from reaching out to IDPs.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests.

Updates on situations of five arrestees in Paletwa:

  • They were handcuffed and taken to the base of LIB 289 on 17 June after being accused of getting involved in the two explosions on 28 May in the town.
  • They were moved to a military base in Sittwe of Rakhine State.
  • They were appointed to appear in court on 30 June.

19 June 2021 – In Hakha at about 8pm, ten youths, who were arrested during a night raid inside the compound of Zion Baptist Church yesterday, were released later today.

Mindat situations as updated by the Mindat Emergency Response Team (MERT):

  • The military council’s soldiers cleaned the General Hospital in hope of re-opening soon, where over 90% of staff join the civil disobedience movement.
  • The negotiation between the Chinland Defense Force and the military council continued.
  • The military council’s soldiers broke in almost all houses in the town, vandalized property and looted belongings including goods in shops.

In Falam at about 9:30pm, Thang Hre Mang, 33, a Christian pastor of the Gospel Baptist Church, succumbed to the COVID-19 infection.

In Tamu, 14 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed with two at the test center and 12 at the General Hospital.

In Kalay, three COVID-19 patients died and 30 new cases were confirmed. Reports said that there were 228 positive cases, with over 40 deaths in the ‘stay-at-home-imposed’ town since the military coup.

In Hakha at about 3pm, the military security forces were seen patrolling some Wards, conducting house raids, seemingly targeting government staff going on strike. One male believed to be a dental doctor and two female school teachers were arrested.

In Kalay township, villagers took to the streets staging ‘flowers’ protests by displaying vases of flowers. In Kalay town, hundreds of residents braved COVID-19 to continue anti-coup protests while displaying banners ‘Freedom from fear’ and some flowers as well as birthday cakes on the streets in honour of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who turns 76 today.

In Tedim town, 46 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, out of 151 individuals tested.

18 June 2021 – In Hakha at about 9pm, residents in Pyidawtha Ward heard several gunshots (over 20 times) near the Hakha Police Station. Drones were also seen hovering over the area. At about 5:12pm, residents heard gunshots (believed to be about 10 times) near Dawrhlun Ward.

In Hakha at about 6pm, the military security forces conducted daylight raids on houses, including those in religious compounds, arresting 10 youths (all males) in the evening today.

In Hakha, the women’s department of the Believers’ Church took a turn providing dinner for detainees at the Hakha police station. It is believed that there are over 80 detainees at the police station and over 100 at the military prison on Mount Rung.

In Hakha, Kam Lo, 70, who was arrested on 25 March during a crackdown on peaceful protesters, was released in the afternoon.

In Mindat township this morning, a 7-month-old IDP baby boy, Khui Shing Bu Ning, died from pneumonia mainly due to lack of medicines and medical services.

In Mindat township, the body of Salai Maung Kee in his twenties was found today. He had not been seen since the clashes at Shwe Aung Thar on 3 June 2021.

In Mindat, a discussion between the military council and the town leaders on behalf of the Chinland Defense Force initiated. An attempt was made for Mindat residents to return to the town but no IDPs have come back because they didn’t believe the military council. The town is still under a complete control of the military council blocking all roads.

In Mindat township, about 80 soldiers were seen moving from Vomtu village towards Htinchaung village.

In Mindat township, three IDPs (Salai Law Ke, 29; Salai Hmun Thang, 29, and Salai Kui Om, 24) who were arrested on 16 June while coming back from Kyaukhtu after having bought some food items were released.

In Kalay, hundreds of residents took to the streets in protest against the military coup.

In Kalay, seven patients died from COVID-19 and 35 new cases were confirmed.

In Falam township, the military troops, believed to be around 200, commandeered a truck carrying chickens at Vaar, and forced the driver to take them to Parte village. Later, there were gunshots heard near Lumbang village. UPDATE: The military troops shot in the air, according to the Falam CDM Supporters.

In Falam, a 79-year-old woman died from COVID-19 at about 1am at the Falam General Hospital.

In Tonzang township, today’s updates on COVID-19:

  • Cikha: 21 positive cases out of 96 tests (new patients are from Darkhai village)
  • Tonzang: 6 positive cases out of 24 tests

In Tedim, 63 new cases (26 males and 37 females) were confirmed out of 174 tests.

In Tamu town of Sagaing Region, 46 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed.

In Rakhine State, the Chin University Students in Rakhine State (CUSR) made another contribution of 1,200,000 Kyats towards supporting IDPs in Chin State. It was the third time the group has raised fund for conflict-affected communities. The group said that they had managed to raise 6,400,000 Kyats in total, of which 54 lakhs were sent for helping IDPs in Chin State and the remaining 10 for IDPs in Karenni State.

17 June 2021 – In Tedim township, the Zomi Revolutionary Army issued a statement saying that they didn’t allow any armed groups in the area they are active and indicating that they were responsible for the destruction of the temporary camp set up by the People Defense Force in Tedim township. The PDF said that their camp was destroyed on 16 June for the second time, with the first incident occusing on 22 May. In Phaya Sakhan village of Mindat township, residents found out that the military troops broke in houses for the second time, ransacked rooms and vandalized property worse than the first time.

In Falam, the Falam Township IDPs Management Team (FTIMT) was formed in an effort to take necessary action to support IDPs in the township. It was reported that there were nover 100 villagers in Thantlang township fleeing their homes to the town for refuge and that there were about 600 villagers taking shelter in Leilet village.

In Falam as of today, there were 97 positive cases of COVID-19 since the military coup, with three deaths.

In Hakha, the Generation Z staged anti-coup protests by holding placards with messages reading:

  • CDM is one of the bullets to shoot soldiers.
  • CDM is one of the most needed weapons in fight against the dictators.
  • Respect to all CDMers; stay strong until the end.
  • Only CDMers are civil servants; non-CDMers are slaves of the military dogs.

In Hakha at about 6pm, residents near the Hakha Golf Club said that they heard gunshots believed to be fired by the military troops who were drinking and eating at a restaurant.

In Thantlang town, 8 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed out of 20 individuals tested.

In Tedim town, 41 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed out of 98 individuals tested at the CCJ Hall.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, holding banners, placards and flags as they chanted slogans and paid respect to the ‘fallen heroes’.

In Tahan Ward of Kalay town, the Tahan bazaar was closed due to COVID-19 starting today until further notice.

In Mindat township, IDPs are running out of food as roads to the township have been blocked by the military security forces, according to Father Nicholas Ghung Thang Se, in charge of Lukse IDP camp.

In Falam township, the military troops were seen carrying their own stuff in the wicker baskets as they walked towards Falam town. In Paletwa, five youths (namely, 1. Aik Tun Min, singer 2. Aik Tun Min, company staff, 3. Aik Tun Min, Forestry Dept staff, 4. U Ya Kyaw, NGO staff, and 5. Ko Aung Tun Soe), who have been kept in police custody since their arrest on 28 May, were taken to the military prison of LIB 289. They were among 21 arrested following the explosions on 28 May in the town. The rest of the arrestees had been released.

In Phaitu village of Tonzang township, 41 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed as a result of 160 persons tested.

In Tedim town at about 1:30am, Rev. Dr. Khai Khan Suan, 65, a Christian pastor of Bethel Assembly of God church, passed away from COVID-19.

16 June 2021 – In Magway Region, the People Defense Force of Magway Region and the People Defense Force of Yesagyo reached a merger based on seven agreements in an effort to fight against the military council.

In Darkhai village of Tonzang township, 18 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed out of 90 villagers tested.

In Aungthantaung village of Paletwa township, Daw Saih Haw, 40, stepped on a landmine while looking for bamboo shoots in a jungle and lost her right leg to the explosion. Villagers took her to Myauk-OO District General Hospital.

In Mindat township, the military security forces arrested three men (Salai Law Ke, 29; Salai Hmun Thang, 29, and Salai Kui Om, 24) on their way back to an IDP camp in the township after their trip to Kyaukhtu town where they bought food items and medicines for IDPs.

In Matupi town at about 9:40pm, the military security forces conducted a night raid on the house of Salai Peter, a Matupi youth, near the bus terminal at about 9:40 tonight and took him away.

In Falam at about 1pm, Mai Lal Muan Kim, 27, who had contracted COVID-19 since 5 June, succumbed to the infection.

In Hakha, the military troops raided the house of Sunny Thang Cung, former Chin State Attorney-General and an NLD MP elect in 2020 election, and forced him to sign a document saying that he would work with or for the National Unity Government (NUG). They left without making any arrest.

In Thantlang and Falam township, the military troops encamping in Khualhring area were seen moving on foot towards Falam town.

In Hakha, a youth group staged a rally sending ‘safety’ messages to the public as the military junta’s forces beefed up security measures at junctions and checkpoints.

In Kalay, a group of residents staged an anti-regime protest by riding motorbikes along the streets.

In Sagaing Region around Monywa, Yinmapin and Salin townships at about 8:30am, residents saw a military chopper hovering over the area. In Kinma village of Magway township this morning, residents found out that over 300 houses were burnt to ashes by military soldiers in plain clothes in the evening on 15 June. Four elderly women around the age of 70 were burnt dead.

In Kanpetlet at about 8am, the military security forces raided the house of Father Michael Aung Ling of the Roman Catholic Church, and abducted him together with one male student. The soldiers reportedly accused him of supporting youths. “They [soldiers] came into the compound of the church and arrested them. They were accused of harbouring and supporting youths. They also accused that rice bags were stored there to help the youth. Actually, there were only bags of rice contributed by members as part of the tithe,” a local told the Chin World Media. The soldiers force-entered and ransacked rooms, showing a total disrespect for the holy place. UPDATES: The RC father was released in the evening.

15 June 2021 – In Falam town, 11 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, putting the total of positive patients since the military coup to 87, with three deaths reported so far.

In Kalay of Sagaing Region, dozens of residents took to the streets as they held anti-regime banners and placards.

In Khampat town of Sagaing Region at about 3am, Rev. Khual Lian Thang, 53, a Christian pastor of Khampat Baptist Church, died from COVID-19.

In Tamu town of Sagaing Region, the People Defense Force (PDF) was formed with the aims of protecting civilians in the Tamu township and fighting against the military council.

In Hakha, youths staged an anti-regime protest in support of CDMers and CDF members as they sent messages of encouragement for IDPs and detainees.

In Hakha, Van Bawi Cung, who was arrested on 13 June (see updates on 13 June), was released at about 7:30pm.

United Nations OCHA Myanmar: The security situation in certain parts of Chin State remains tense, with hostilities between the Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) and the Chinland Defence Force (CDF) reported regularly in Hakha, Kanpetlet, Mindat, Matupi and Thantlang townships, as well as in neighboring townships in Magway Region. According to local partners, an estimated 820 people in Thantlang Township fled to nearby jungles on 11 June due to the hostilities and are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance. Over 18,000 people are currently hosted in 74 displacement sites in Mindat, Kanpetlet, Hakha, Matupi and Thantlang townships in Chin state since 12 May and in Saw Township in Magway Region since 6 June. This is in addition to reports of people, believed to be in the thousands, who fled violence to forests and mountainous areas since 12 May. Humanitarian partners are making every effort to respond to the needs of people who fled and those who remain in affected areas; however, access restrictions are complicating these efforts. Chin State is already hosting 9,850 people across 27 displacement sites in Paletwa due to the MAF and the Arakan Army conflict between January 2019 and November 2020.

In Mindat township,

  • IDPs suffer from diarrhoea, dysentery, influenza and malaria.
  • Grave concerns for IDPs as COVID-19 cases are confirmed in neighbouring places.
  • IDPs in need of humanitarian supplies such as food, medicines and drinking water.
  • Military troops encamp at No. 9-mile location on the Mindat-Matupi road as they send in reinforcements. Troops also encamp in Shwe Aung Thar on the Chin-Magway border.
  • Military troops encamp in Vomtu village where IDPs were initially taking shelter.
  • Military troops continue breaking in houses, vandalizing property and looting belongings.
  • Military troops conduct stop and search of all vehicles and passengers near Pauk town on the Mindat-Pakokku road.
  • Military soldiers sold looted items (including phones, phone top-up cards, motorbikes and other traditional items) in Kyaukhtu area.

[The Times of India] June 15 (TOI): The chief minister of Myanmar’s Chin state, Salai Lian Luai, was among the Myanmarese nationals who took shelter in Mizoram, high placed sources in the state government said on Monday. He is among the 24 Myanmar legislators, elected in the 2020 general elections, and over 16,000 people who fled the country after military crackdown on anti-coup protesters and took shelter in Mizoram, the sources said.

[Mizoram News] In the wake of sporadic encounters between Myanmar military and CNF/CDF in Chin State-a short distance away from Farkawn village in Mizoram’s Champhai district at least 120 refugees are now taking shelter in make-shift tents along Tiau River on the international boundary between India and Myanmar.

In Mizoram State, hundreds of refugees from Chin State fled recent hostilities between Myanmar Armed Forces and the civilian resistance fighters into the Indo-Myanmar border. According to the YMA (Young Mizo Association), there are about 60 new arrivals in Vaphai, over 300 in Chawngtui – which include about 100 elderly and children, and at least 120 near Farkawn village.

In Hakha, eight arrestees were released. (Names to be confirmed)

14 June 2021 – In Hakha, the SAC placed a total restriction on all of the passenger bus services due to COVID-19.

In Hakha in Dawrhlun Ward at about 8pm, the military security forces were looking for a person named ‘Daniel’. As they didn’t find Daniel, they abducted two individuals – a mother and a young man – in their house who were believed to be related to him. “Someone who can speak Hakha very well went to the house and asked if Daniel was at home, saying there was a package that he wanted to give him. Immediately, troops arrived and took them away,” a person close to the family said.

In Falam, Police Corporal Lal Lian Dawl submitted a letter of going on strike as he joined the civil disobedience movement.

In Mindat township, residents including children and elderly, kept moving from one place to another in search of safe refuge and shelter in heavy rains. It is estimated that there are over 15,000 IDPs in the townships. The military troops blocked main roads leading to Mindat, putting IDPs in difficult situations as humanitarian supports could not be transported into the township.

In Baunghte village of Mindat township, the military troops broke in houses, killed domestic animals, cooked and ate them, and vandalized belongings including motorbikes. Residents found some remnants of weapons used by the military troops.

In Phaya Sakhan village of Mindat township, two mentally challenged individuals, Mang Maung (47, male) and Ke Sein Ngom (63, female) were given medical treatment as they safely arrived in the village. Mang Maung was arrested and handcuffed on 10 June 2021 by the military troops when they entered the village. He had injuries in the head and legs. Ke Sein Ngom had been injured in the right leg as she was hit by a bullet while she was lying in her house.

In Kanpetlet, the Chinland Defense Force said that they had stopped activities in Kanpetlet town since 1 June and that gunshots and other attacks that threatened residents and damaged houses including a Christian church were carried out by the military troops currently based in the town.

In Kyauktada of Yangon at about 10pm, Mai Amazing Grace, 24, was abducted from her hostel by police who said they were checking a ‘guest list’. She was accused of storing some political photos in her phone and taken to the Kyauktada township police station.

In Khampat town of Sagaing Region, four new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed with residents in No. 2 Ward. The main market has been closed until further notice in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus.

In Chinsu village of Kalay township, Rev. Ngun Nei Thang, a 69-year-old Christian pastor, died from COVID-19.

In Thantlang township, hundreds of residents in 13 villages were fleeing their homes following recent hostilities between the civilian resistance fighters and the military troops in Khualhring area.

In Ramthlo of Falam township, 15 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in addition to two existing patients, making the total to 15 in the village situated on the main Hakha-Falam road, where a Christian pastor died from COVID-19 on 12 June.

In Chin State, the Chinland Defense Force said in response to the accusation published in the junta’s newspaper about the burning of school textbooks that they were not responsible for the destruction. Textbooks (estimated to be 127,797 books) for KG and Grade 4 students transported by two trucks were burnt to ashes on the road between Gangaw and Hakha.

In Aungthitsa Ward of Kalay town at about 7:30pm, the military security forces in plain clothes were seen patrolling the area. Residents warned each other not to go out or avoid the area.

13 June 2021 – In Hakha, the military security forces conducted stop and search at main junctions in the town, arresting at least nine individuals, mostly youths of one female and eight males.

In Kalay, Rev. France, 53, a Christian pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Taungphila Ward died from COVID-19 at about 1pm. Rev. James San Thawm Thang, 43, succumbed to COVID-19 at about 9:30 in Tahan Ward.

In Falam, Sui Ceu, 67, male, originally from Locom village, died from COVID-19 in Cinmual Ward.

Updates in Mindat township:

  • The military troops damanged Christian church buildings and looted collections in Mindat and Kanpetlet townships.
  • The military troops destroyed a drinking water plant using a landmine. (Note: Before the destruction, there were two drinking water plants in Mindat town, of which one belongs to a leading member of the USDP party.)
  • Landslides happen due to heavy rains, damaging roads and making accessibility more difficult.

In Shet village of Mindat township, the military troops set fire to two private houses.

In Chin State, a phone conversation between a father in a village and his son in a town: “Dad, is it not better if you move to a town?” “Son, how can I just leave our youths while they are giving their lives in this fight?”

In Hakha in the afternoon, the military security forces conducted daylight ‘stop and search’ at gunpoint of anyone going on the main road near the town center. Residents said, “They [soldiers] whistled and stopped anyone passing the town center. They checked everything including the toolbox of a motorbike. Those beat and kicked some passers-by who didn’t stop immediately. We saw one arrested and taken into a military truck. We also saw one who was forced to kneel down and keep his hands in the back of his head while his motorbike was left lying in the middle of the road.”

In Kalay, residents took to the streets in their continuous protests against the military coup, holding flags, banners and placards as they chanted anti-regime slogans.

In Bawngthe village of Mindat township at about 8pm (date to be confirmed), the military junta’s soldiers burnt one brick building and over 50 motorbikes parked in the compound of the house (known to be Khomkhui Garden) by IDPs.

In Kalay, an anti-regime protest was organized by scattering balloon condoms with printed photos of the SAC leaders on vases put by the roadside near the town center.

In Hakha, the public posted a message in response to a letter of threats issued by a group called Nat Soe Kyi, literally meaning ‘the devils’ in English (see updates on 9 June), saying that the Hakha public know the group and its associates, most of them being military soldiers in plain clothes and their undercover informants and warning them to stop terrorizing the civilians.

In Mindat, the Mindat Township IDPs Camp Management Committee posted updates on its Facebook page that it continued putting more effort into supporting IDPs amid various challenges including blocks of roads and transportation of humanitarian aid by the military junta.

12 June 2021 – [Mindat Emergency Response Team] In Mindat township, the military troops arrived in villages of No. 1 and 2 areas, killing and eating domestic animals, drinking locally fermented rice beer and breaking fermenting barrels, and bombing houses. The military troops, despite no confrontations from the Chinland Defense Force, were seen patrolling villages where invaluable traditional items and money (mostly collected for religious purposes) were looted. With the arrival of rainy season, IDPs face challenges in terms of shelter, drinking water, food and medicines as well as medical services.

In Falam, Sang Hlei Thang, a clerk at the Falam District Police Forces, submitted his letter of going on strike, joining the civil disobedience movement.

In Hakha, the SAC imposed new restrictions on passenger bus services, saying that all the services would stop until further notice because of COVID-19.

In Rihkhuadar of Falam township, residents said that there was a military chopper landing in the Indo-Myanmar border town at night.

In Mindat township, the Myanmar Red Cross Society and the Magway Region Red Cross Committee jointly arranged transportation of three IDPs who were in need of urgent medical help ti Kyaukhu by an ambulance. From Kyaukhu accompanied by the military officer named Zin Naing Oo, they managed to continue their travel and arrived in Pakokku General Hospital around 5pm. It was managed through the negotiations between the SAC members and local community leaders. The patients are:

  1. Boy, 12 years old
  2. Girl, 10 years old
  3. Baby, 2 days old

In Rezua town of Matupi township, one of the Ward Administrators in collaboration with administration members sold over 20 plots of land in Lawngye Ward for his own benefits.

In Lukse village of Mindat township, one baby IDP passed away.

In Maypon township of Rakhine State, Chin communities in Yawchaung areas formed a central committee called Yawchaung Chin Charity Association (YCCA), which is comprised of 10 village representatives (YCCA in Oakkan, Taunggyi, Chongchaung, Kwaygooseih, Kyokyapyin, Pyichia, Zeepauk, Yekhaungchaung, Taukchaung and Taungzaing) with the aims of stonger coordination for social, educational and cultural development.

In Hakha at about 4pm, the military security forces conducted random stop and search at the BOC checkpoint, checking every vehicle inside out.

In Hakha, Piang Bik, a Christian pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Ramthlo village of Falam township passed away from COVID-19. He was taken to Hakha yesterday as his conditions got worse.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests walking along the main streets as they raised flags, banners and placards. Residents said that there was an electric outage at night.

The MWD TV channel broadcast a list of a nationwide health staff CDMer team that works together to provide health services in person and via tele-support at local levels, including State Health Admin Team (SHAT) consisting of seven members involving Dr. Sharon Par. This was released after one of the leading members was abducted by the military junta’s forces.

In Mindat, one of the CDF (Chinland Defense Force) members said that they had detained some military deserters. Because of the difficult situation, they gave them some money and let them go. But later, they were found leading some IDPs in a jungle to a safe place. Since they said they didn’t want to kill villagers who fed them, they let them stay with the team.

In Hakha, a local source said that the military based on Mount Rung has been increasing its battalions from four to ten. (CG yet to confirm)

In Thantlang township (UPDATE), hundreds of IDPs who had fled their homes following recent armed clashes between the Chinland Defense Force and the military troops in the area are in need of waterproof covers (tarpaulins), foods and medicines.

11 June 2021 – In Thantlang township, the Chinland Defense Force issued a notice warning residents, including internal migrant workers, not to get involved in activities associated with the terrorist military council.

In Mindat, the military junta’s forces arrested at least seven IDPs, includng one child (2 males and 4 females) in Shit-Hmway village. Christian leaders were reportedly negotiating with the military council for their release.

In Kalay, four new patients of COVID-19 passed away.

In Chin State according to the SAC, there are 27 positive cases of COVID-19 out of 290 tests conducted. There are 1 positive case in Hakha, 1 in Falam, 9 in Rihkhuadar, 14 in Tonzang, and 2 in Cikha. (Source: Dr. Aung Myint Oo, the current head of the Chin State Health Department) Note: Data of COVID-19 cases in Chin State published by CDM doctors in other townships was different.

In Tonzang, there are 14 new cases out of 47 tests and in Cikha, 2 out of 7. Up to today, there have been a total of 136 positive cases out of 431 tests in Tonzang town, with four deaths, and 201 positive cases out of 758 tests in Cikha town, with six deaths reported.

In Thantlang township on Khualhring mountain range, the firefight continued, forcing an estimated 6,00 people from three villages flee into the nearby places, mostly in the jungle.

In Mindat, the military junta’s forces continued breaking in houses, vandalizing and ransacking, and looting belongings including a collection of money for churches.

In Senthang area of Hakha township (UPDATES), an estimated 5,000 people from eight villages fled their homes into hiding because of the recent armed clashes between the Chinland Defense Force and the military junta’s forces.

In Mindat township (UPDATES), the military junta’s forces continued using villagers as human shields, occupied schools in Shet village and a monastery in Vungkham village, and reached up to Ma-shing-hlaw village. They arrested civilians in Phaya Sakhan village and forced them to help look for members of the Chinland Defense Force.

In Chin State as of today, there are over 4,000 children going to school as per the registration since 1 June, according to the Chin State Education Department. Schools in Paletwa township were forced to close due to COVID-19 cases (see updates on 9 June).

10 June 2021 – In Hakha, the Chinland Defense Force demanded the immediate unconditional release of all innocent detainees, saying that it would otherwise continue its serious fight across Chin State against the military regime.

In Rihkhuadar town of Falam township, 30 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, putting the current total of positive patients to 61 in the Indian-Myanmar border town. Four patients are being isolated while the rest are put in home quarantine.

In Hakha, the Generation Z staged a wreath rally displaying printed photos of Salai Choi Ling, Salai Thang Ling and Salai Shing Aung Thang, who were killed on armed conflict in Mindat township on 4 June (See updates on 4 June). One of the printed messages reads: “You gave your today for our nation’s tomorrow. Rest in power, our heroes. You will always be remembered’.

In Tonzang township up to today, there have been 321 positive cases detected out of 1,135 tests, with 199 cases out of 751 tests in Cikha and 122 out of 384 in Tonzang. (Source: The Tonzang Post)

In Chin State, the Chinland Defense Force announced that necessary action would be taken across the state if Chin detainees were not immediately released.

In Lawngtlai district of Mizoram State, the Lai Students’ Association provided humanitarian assistance, including 126 rice bags and 15 bags of potatoes for refugees from Myanmar currently taking shelter in 11 villages yesterday and today.

In Hakha township, a firefight between the Chinland Defense Force and the military junta’s forces coming to Chin State from Gangaw as part of the reinforcement broke out at about 3pm between Gangaw and Hakha, leaving at least 10 Tatmadaw soldiers dead.

In Hakha, staff of the Hakha University who joined the civil disobedience movement formed an interim administrative body that will take the responsibility regarding issues related to the university, currently occupied by the military troops, in collaboration with the National Unity Government.

In Mindat, IDPs currently taking shelter in Shet, Phaya Sakhan, Shwe-Aung-thar, Khuhshithmay, Vomtu, and Shwetwontoo villages left their temporary camps as the military troops surrounded and attacked them in three different operations yesterday and today. IDPs including elderly and children ran away in heavy rains.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests amid heavy rains.

In Kalay, eight patients of COVID-19 passed away in the morning, putting the total of deaths to 28 since the military coup.

In Sopum village at about 12noon, the military troops, estimated to be around 100, were seen retreating from their temporary base. UPDATES: They were seen going towards Khualhring tlang.

In Thantlang township in the morning, an exchange of firefight between the Chinland Defense Force and the military junta’s forces broke out between Mualkai village and Tihbual village, forcing hundreds of villagers into hiding. Hundreds of residents ran away from their homes into nearby places. UPDATE: The Chinland Defense Force announced the deaths of 17 Tatmadaw soldiers, including a captain in the firefight which took place at about 10 am in the Khualhring mountain range.

In Tamu, nine new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed with COVID-19 updates in Tamu district of Sagaing Regioin as of 10 June:

UNICEF Myanmar: Almost 90 per cent of those in need of maternal health care in Mindat, Chin State, are unable to get access. Together with partners, UNICEF is supporting women to obtain care around the time of birth.

9 June 2021 – In Kanpetlet, the military junta’s forces used heavy weapons in its attacks in the town, damaging houses including a church building.

In Thantlang in the early morning at about 1:30am and at about 6pm, there were explosions at Laipawnglung checkpoint and places near the town. “At the Laipawnglung checkpoint, there were about six blasts. And there were about 10 blasts at three different locations on the outskirts of the town. And at night, we heard about four gunshots,” said a resident.

In Hakha, a new group called Nat Soe Kyi, literally meaning ‘the devils’ in English, stuck on lamp posts in Electric Ward a message of threats for retaliation and a list of 19 targeted names, who were mostly NLD MPs, State ministers, CDM civil servants and individuals, mostly youths, targeted by the military council. In fact, some of them have already been in police custody. Residents said that they were not locals but plain-clothes soldiers.

In Kanpetlet at about 7:50pm, residents heard gunshots in the town.

In Hakha, four youths detained in the June 5 mass arrests by the military troops in Hakha following the explosions in Khuathar were released. The male quartet were the last to have been freed out of 61 individuals arrested.

In Hmunthar village of Thantlang township, the military troops, estimated to be around 50, arrived in the village on Khualhring mountain range and reportedly stayed in houses with villagers. The arrival of the troops forced some residents to flee into hiding.

In Tonzang township, updates on the COVID-19 situations are as below:
In Cikha: 751 tests; 199 positive cases
In Tonzang: 384 tests; 122 positive cases
Total tests: 1,135; total cases: 321.

In Hakha, youths staged an indoors rally in honour of five young friends, who gave their lives in the struggle against the military coup, with a background banner reading ‘Rest In Power’.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests.

In Mindat township, an explosive device buried in the ground, believed to be a land mine, was found in the jungle near Shwe Aung Thar village. “I would like to suggest about this to our soldiers [CDF members]. This morning, we found one land mine in our usual jungle path. We were very lucky because the person behind me saw it when I was like one step away from the device,” said a local villager.

In Paletwa, seven new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed with villagers from Myaik village near the Indian-Myanmar border, who were arriving in the town for a medical check-up. Schools were closed and other public areas were put under strict restrictions.

In Mizoram State of India, the Mizo Zirlar Pawl (MZP), a university students’ group, provided humanitarian aid (including rice, lentil, potatoes and cash) for refugees from Myanmar currently taking shelter in Saiha and Lawngtlai districts.

In Paletwa, the Khumi Media Group reported that six out of 21 arrested following the explosions are still in custody [namely, 1. Aik Tun Min, singer 2. Aik Tun Min (company staff), 3. Aik Tun Min (Forestry Dept staff) 4. U Ya Kyaw (NGO staff) 5. U Weik Yim (Health Dept staff) and Ko Aung Tun Soe)].

8 June 2021 – In Hakha in the morning, the military junta’s soldiers in plain clothes arrested a 50-year-old shopowner at her stall inside the Myoma market after being accused of refusing to sell goods to the soldiers. UPDATES: She was released later in the day. On a separate occasion, two carpenters who were requested to clean and repair the house damaged by the explosion on 5 June were abducted by the military junta’s forces.

In Tonzang township, five new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed.

In Hakha, the military junta based on Mount Rung released 22 males randomly arrested on 5 June following the explosions in Khuathar Ward.

In Mindat township, the military junta’s forces continued attacking by using heavy weapons on IDPs and civilian resistance fighters. It was reported that some IDPs were injured (Note: numbers not confirmed). In particular, one villager was seriously injured in his leg as he stepped on a landmine which was laid on the road near the entrance to the village (Note: CG cannot confirm).

In Hakha in the morning, the military troops, believed to be about 50, were seen travelling on foot towards Thantlang. Residents said that drones were seen hovering in the area during the movement of the troops.

In Thantlang around 9am, the military troops were seen travelling on foot in two directions – one towards Sopum village and another towards Khuafo village. Both of the villages are situated on the roads leading to a base of the Chin National Front.

In Hakha and Thantlang area (updates), the military troops (estimated to be over 100) were seen moving towards Khualhring tlang and Rihkhuadar in Falam township. The movement was believed to be related to a build-up of troops towards the CNF base on the Indian-Myanmar border.

  • About 50 soldiers were seen travelling towards Rihkhuadar via Thantlang township around 10am.
  • About 50 soldiers were seen eating by the roadside near Tita between Thantlang and Hakha towns around 11:30.
  • About 50 soldiers were seen at Buva river between Thantlang town and Khuafo village around 9am.

In Mindat at about 6:20pm, the military troops occupied two schools in Shet village and a school in Phaya Sakhan village.

In Mindat, Salai Yaw Khui Aung was killed in the fighting against the military junta’s forces. In another clash between Phaya Sakhan village and Shet village, about 10 miles from Mindat town, 18-year-old Salai Ling Yaw Om was killed. “Today, the attacks happened in two locations. They launched heavy weapons. We didn’t hear the sound of a chopper flying today. The noise of heavy weapons can be heard as we speak now,” a spokesperson of the Mindat public administration body told the Myanmar Now.

In Rakhine State, the Chin University Students in Rakhine State (CUSR) collected 3,200,000 Kyats for providing support for IDPs in Mindat and Kanpetlet townships. It was the second time the CUSR has raised fund for helping IDPs in Chin State.

In Thantlang in the morning, residents said that they saw the military troops, estimated to be about 50 soldiers, travelling on foot towards Khualhring mountain range. “On the way home from our farm, we saw one group at Buva river where they checked our bags. And we met another group near the entrance to Thantlang town,” said one farmer.

In Mindat, the Chinland Defense Force announced the deaths of 21 members who gave their lives in the fight against the military coup between 13 May to 7 June 2021:

In Rakhine State, the Mro University Students Association (MUSA) raised fund in Mro (Khami) villages in Myauk-Oo township for supporting IDPs in Chin State.

In Rihkhuadar town of Falam township, 14 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, making the total to 20 with six cases found yesterday. Currently, 18 are put in home quarantine while two are being isolated at a hospital facility.

In Kalay, two patients, an 89-year-old man and a 50-year-old man, passed away. As of today, 23 positive cases were confirmed out of 37 tests, with 14 deaths so far since the military coup in February.

In Thantlang, four military trucks were seen arriving in the town reportedly as part of the reinforcements following the recent agreement between the NUG (National Unity Government) and the CNF (Chin National Front).

In Surkhua of Hakha township, there are about 50 elderly and sick individuals taking shelter in the RC church building. They are being looked after by the church staff as families fled their homes into hiding following the brutal attacks by the military troops in recent days.

In E-sakhan village of Mindat township between 1 and 7 June, the military junta’s forces broke in houses (estimated to about 45), ransacked and vandalized property, and looted belongings including invaluable traditional items and a collection of church money (about 3,000,000 Ks). They also destroyed tarpaulins and a white flag erected in the compound of a church for IDPs who had already left the place because of the attacks.

In Hakha at night, the military junta’s forces approached some youths who were sitting in the compound of the Hakha City Hall and made an attempt to arrest them. However, the youths managed to run away on foot and their motorbikes were taken away by the soldiers.

In Sopum village of Thantlang township at about 4pm, the military troops (estimated to be about 100) arrived in the village. About 50 soldiers occupied a school while the rest of the troops used a religious site as their base. “They arrived on foot. A 12-wheel truck also arrived carrying rations. Some soldiers looked quite old. They didn’t have any rucksack but carried baskets,” said one of the villagers. Sopum is situated on the main road towards Camp Victoria.

In some villages in Thantlang township, leaders requested residents to remain, not flee, in an effort to collectively protect the village.

Situation updates of Senthang area in Hakha township:

  • Around Leiva in Senthang area, the military troops opened fire on innocent residents, who fled their homes into hiding in the jungle. Later, villagers found out some materials left by the military troops (see photos below). The items included what seemed to be fire crackers, empty bullets and badges (insignia).
  • The Chinland Defense Force found some weapons left by the military troops during the armed conflict near Sukhua village, Hakha township (see photos below).
  • In Dinlaup village, the military troops broke in houses, vandalized property and ransacked rooms and boxes, and destroyed food (see photos below).
  • In Surkhua village, there are at least 50 people, mostly elderly and sick, currently taking shelter at the RC church building.
  • At present, there are more than 6,000 people who have fled the brutality of the military troops who invaded their villages and terrorized them by using gunshots, blasts and other heavy weapons. While residents are hiding in the jungle, the military troops violently vandalized their houses, robbed their valuable things, and killed their domestic animals, which were cooked and eaten at the deserted houses.

7 June 2021 – In Mindat township according to a spokesperson of the Mindat civilian administration body, at least 50 military soldiers were killed in armed clashes starting around 10am on 6 June up to 7pm tonight.

In Falam, 11 GAD staff who had joined the civil disobedience movement and had been dismissed from their respective posts were given a letter demanding a repayment of two-month salaries (360,000 Kyats) given to them in advance as a loan without interest.

In Hakha, seven young females who had been detained at the police station were released. They were randomly arrested on the streets by the military security forces following the explosions in Khuathar Ward on 5 June.

In Mindat at 11:40am, three private houses near the office of the National League of Democracy was on fire in Bawathit Ward. No casualties were reported. Information about how the blaze started remains unknown.

In Hakha, youths organized a ‘wreath’ rally in honour of the three young men who were killed in the explosion in Khuathar Ward.

In Tonzang town at night, Daw Ning Khua Ciin, 85, died from COVID-19 infection. As of today, there are 8 positive cases out of 45 tests in Cikha and 7 cases out of 16 tests, putting the total positive patients to 15.

In Kanpetlet, residents were warned to be cautious about three policemen Private Kyaw Kyaw, Private Kui Ling and Private Naing Kee who pretended to be CDMers and travelled to different IDP camps in the township to get information.

In Hakha at night, the military junta’s soldiers force-entered houses, saying that they wanted to check if families had any guests. However, residents said that the soldiers thoroughly ransacked the rooms, apparently looking for something else more than said. Later, residents heard several gunshots.

In Paletwa, three individuals – Aik Aung Thiha, Aung Naing Tun and Aik John Nyan Lin Tun aka Aposu – who were randomly arrested in connection with the 28 May explosions were released. There are still six individuals being detained.

In Rihkhuadar of Falam township, six new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the Indian-Myanmar border town.

In Kalay in the afternoon, residents staged an anti-regime protest.

Messages of encouragement and support sent to people in Mindat township were posted, including:

  • Kan dawt tuk, Mindat (I love you very much, Mindat).
  • Stay strong, Mindat. I am there with you.
  • Great hornbill, plant the victory flag in your land of loyalty.
  • We cannot be there in person, but our kindness is there.
  • The world has already known Mindat’s bravery.

In Mindat, the New Light of Myanmar (Burmese version) propagated false news reporting that a 52-year-old abbot was killed on the Mindat-Matupi road at about 27 miles away from Mindat town. The military junta’s mouthpiece said that the abbot was killed by a terrorist armed group while traveling in a car to Hakha. “I had contacts with Sayardaw yesterday. He is safe. I got worried about him because of news like this by the military. News posted on social media saying that he was killed and burned was not true,” a Buddhist monk in Chin State told the Khit Thit media. A spokesperson of the Mindat civilian administration body told the Mizzima that the news about the killing of the abbot was not true.

Myanmar Red Cross Society: After 13 months of displacement and with the rainy season around the corner, thousands of families who fled their homes in southern Chin State remain extremely vulnerable and in dire need of assistance. The Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) set up a joint operation to reach those families seeking shelter in Samee and Paletwa. Together, we provided cash assistance to nearly 2000 households and materials to renovate and rebuild 1800 shelters. We also donated engine pumps and fuel in Samee to secure access to water for displaced communities. Mine risk awareness sessions were conducted for more than 700 people, with billboards being installed to warn communities of the danger posed by mined areas. The MRCS together with ICRC have been providing humanitarian assistance to displaced families in Chin State since last year. “After more than one year of displacement, most of the shelters across the 11 camps were extremely deteriorated and unable to withstand a monsoon,” said Aye Aye Nyein, MRCS Chin Operation. “Along with the MRCS, we will continue to help families affected by conflict, without discrimination – seeking to help them cope with the challenges they are facing,” stated Olivier Dorighel, ICRC Operations Manager for Chin.

In Yaw area of Gangaw, the Yaw Defense Force issued a media release saying that they were informed of a group (Pyo Saw Hti) associated with the military council raising fund in the name of the YDF and terrorizing people. The statement said that the YDF stands with and for the people, and would find out the group responsible for inciting this kind of misunderstanding.

In Mindat, Salai Lin Naing, first-year student of EP at the Government Technical Institute in Hakha, died during a clash near Shet while eating in a village as he was hit by a bullet.

6 June 2021 – In Mindat township, the military troops were seen walking on foot in plain clothes as they carried guns and other unknown materials on the back.

In Falam, more staff of the township education department joined the civil disobedience movement.

In Mindat township, Salai Thang Mang, a first-year student of EP at the Government Technical Institute in Hakha was killed in a clash against the military junta’s forces. UPDATE: Four CDF members were killed and about 20 injured. It was believed that over 50 soldiers died. The military troops used heavy weapons and a military chopper dropping at least two times as well as what seemed to be chemical elements in the weapons launched.

In Kalay, five individuals (believed to be four males and one female) were abducted in Natmyaung village and Natchaung village at about 9pm for no obvious reasons. (Ko Ko Win, Thar Myauk, Phoe Ta Yauk, Soe Ko and Aye Mya Thamet Pingping)

In Hakha, 28 young females ramdomly arrested on 5 June and detained in the police station were released. They were among 61 individuals arrested following the explosions in Khuathar Ward yesterday.

In Mindat, fighting intensifies as the military junta’s forces with more reinforcements are now attacking in three different operations:

  1. In the east of the town towards villages where hundreds of IDPs are currently sheltering
  2. In the west of the town towards villages where IDPs are staying and
  3. In the Mindat-Magway border near Shwe-Aung-Thar village.

“This morning, soldiers came in two groups towards villages where IDPs are sheltering. About 90 soldiers went from Baungthe village to Chaungsung village and we [CDF members] started fighting there. Another group coming from the west of the town clashed with our members near Shet village. And the last is in Shwe-Aung-Thar. So, we are simultaneously fighting against three groups of the military troops,” said one of the Mindat CDF members. The military forces use heavey weapons. The fighting has continuously taken place since 3 June. Updates at 4pm: Clashes took place between Mindat town and Phayar Sakhan where the military forces used long-range heavey weapons launched from A-shih-Mi-that hill. On a separate occasion, soldiers from LIB 274 launched heavy weapons in their attacks between Mindat town and Shet village. A military chopper was seen hovering over the area.

In Hakha, thousands of residents attended the funeral service for three young men, Salai Phun Sang, civil engineering student of GTI, Salai Tial Chawn, singer and footballer, and Salai Lai Kulh Thang, footballer, who were killed by explosions yesterday.

In Falam, Police Private Tluang Lian Thang joined the civil disobedience movement.

In Kalay, 11 out of 12 youths arrested on 4 June around 6pm in Nan-ka-ling-chaung Ward and taken away in nine military trucks were released. One identified as Ko Lama (to be confirmed) is still in custody and has been kept in a separate room, according to those released. They also said that they saw five youths being detained in another room while they were in jail.

In Kalay, hundreds of residents continued anti-coup protests.

In Hakha township, an estimated 4,000 villagers including children and elderly from at least four villages (Surkhua, Hausen, Dinlaupa and Sakta) in Senthang area fled their homes as the military junta’s forces broke in houses, ransacked and vandalized property, and fired several shots. [Note: Loklung village has been deserted by residents following clashes on 18-19 May.]

In Gangaw township of Magway Region, IDPs from Namkha and Ye-hla villages are in urgent need of humanitarian aid including medicines.

In Mindat township, there are over 10,000 IDPs scattering across over 30 temporary camps, according to the June 6 data of the Mindat township IDPs Camp Management Committee.

In Kalay, one elderly man died from COVID-19 in Hmunthar Ward.

5 June 2021 – In Kalay, three persons died from COVID-19, making the total of deaths since the coup to 9 in the town.

In Tedim township, residents in Tungzang village, about 15 miles away from Tedim town, saw a man, who was selling ice-cream, accidentally dropping a pistol, tucked inside his hip. He is believed to a mobile migrant worker from outside of Chin State selling ice-cream by motorbike from one place to another. (Note: To be verified and confirmed.)

In Hakha around early afternoon, the military troops, estimated to be around 20, were seen walking together with guns around the town distributing masks. However, residents said that they looked as if they had been looking for people.

In Tedim, a sticker protest was held in protest against oil companies in the country, with messages reading ‘Chevron, Total, Posco: Suspend payments to the military’, ‘Stand with the people of Myanmar, not with the murderers’.

In Hakha at about 4:30pm, explosions were heard in two locations, with one in Pyidawtha Ward and another in Khuathar Ward. The Khuathar Ward blast killed one male on the spot and another male, who was seriously injured, died after about an hour. Another man was later confirmed dead. In Hakha township, it was reported that the military troops were seen going towards Sakta village from Surkhua. On the way, they stopped in villages including Hausen and Dinlaupa where they broke in houses and killed domesticated animals. In Cikha town of Tonzang township, one patient of COVID-19 passed away in a hospital, pushing the death tolls to six in total so far in the Indian-Myanmar border town since the February 2021 coup.

In Kanpetlet at about 8am, an exchange of firefight between the military junta’s forces and the Chinland Defense Force broke out, according to the town residents.

In Hakha, the street writing ‘We want democracy’ in front of the Myanma Economic Bank near the SAC building was criss-crossed in white to make it illegible.

In Mindat township, Singer Htoo L Lin posted on his Facebook page that he had gone to Mindat town and visited IDP camps arranged at monasteries and churches. He said that he would come back to help IDPs with humanitarian assistance. The camps at monasteries and churches in the town are being managed by the SAC members.

4 June 2021 – In Chin State as of today, the education department told the Khonumthung News that 4,573 out of over 10,000 admitted children went to school.

In Surkhua of Hakha township, the military troops that had stayed in the town since 1 June following the attacks in late May left reportedly for Hakha. It was reported that the majority of residents, estimated to be around 1,700, fled into nearby places, making the town almost empty with only a few elderly left alone at home. “The military troops arrived and opened fire several times. People got scared and started running away,” said a Surkhua villager.

In Hakha, Phun Za Tling, female, 17, who was arrested on 28 May (see updates on 28 May below) in a house raid, was released despite being charged with 505a.

In Kalay at about 1pm, there were three explosions in front of a KTV bar, believed to be owned by a police officer. No casualties were reported.

In Chin State, the military council announced on the MRTV the imposition of a ‘stay at home’ restriction in the townships of Tedim, Falam, Hakha and Thantlang starting from 5am on 5 June, addition to Tonzang township.

In Aizawl, Mizoram State of India, U Tun Tun Oo, a police CDMer and son of Pu Biakmawia, a school teacher in Tahan of Kalay township, died from a complication of lung disease.

In Hakha at the six-road junction in Hakhathar Ward, the military junta’s security forces arrested three individuals, including a female under the age of 18, at the checkpoint. Later, all of them were released.

In Shwe-aung-thar village on the Chin-Magway border, firefights between the Chinland Defense Force and the military junta’s forces continued. Salai Choi Ling, a police CDMer who acted as a leading member of the CDF group, was shot dead in the earning morning reportedly by a military sniper. It was reported that Salai Thang Ling and Salai Shing Aung died in the fighting.

In Mindat township, Singer Htoo L Lin provided humanitarian assistance in person for IDPs in Mindat township.

In Kalay, five patients of COVID-19 died in one day. They were two males, two females and one child (An elderly man in Khonetoomyotha, one from Taungphila, one from Tinthar, one from Aungmayman, and another one from Natchaung).

In Kanpetlet at about 6pm, Salai Thang Hung Kee, an IDP hiding in the jungle, was arrested by the military security forces while he was going back to Thang Om village to get waterproof plastic sheet (tarpaulin). He was taken to Mindat.

In Tonzang township, 17 GAD staff (7 females and 10 males) in Tonzang and Cikha towns were dismissed from their current posts for joining the civil disobedience movement.

In Hninkha village of Gangaw township, the military troops broke in houses, ransacked, damaged, and looted belongings including motorbikes, rice, oil and other valuable items. The village is home to over 1,000 households. It was believed that the troops arrived in the area following the deaths of five SAC supporters including a village administrator. Residents in other nearby villages such as Yeshin, Chaungkhuah, Hmuailay, Yeshinma and Tawwin fled their homes.

In Kalay, residents continued anti-coup protests amid fears of COVID-19 and crackdowns by the military junta’s forces. They stood in silence in honour of the fallen heroes.

3 June 2021 – In Hakha township near Surkhua, it was reported that Salai Cung Peng Lian, a CDM member, was shot dead during the firefights on the Hakha-Matupi road, which had started since 31 March.

The Zomi Federal Union issued a statement congratulating teachers, students and parents on their support in the civil disobedience movement.

In Mandalay, Police Corporal Ling Hung was shot dead while on his way to work by motorbike. No detailed information as to who was responsible remained available.

In Shwe-aung-thar village on the Chin-Magway border near Mindat township, skirmishes between the Chinland Defense Force (Mindat) and the military troops occupying a monastery broke out between 5:30am and 7am, leaving at least three dead and four injured.

In Kanpetlet township, a group of about 500 IDPs including elderly, women and children, fled to Magway Region in search of temporary shelter following ongoing armed attacks in the Chin township.

In Kalay township near Do-nwe village around 10am, an exchange of firefights between the People’s Defence Force (Kalay) and the military troops patrolling the area on foot occurred around the cemetery, leaving four soldiers dead and three PDF members injured. It was reported that the military troops used heavy weapons, destroying some houses and forcing residents to flee into hiding.

In Falam, three new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed.

In Thantlang town, residents said that no students were seen going to school. In the town, there are 2 high schools, 3 middle schools and 1 primary school, which are now left empty. And it was the same in Hakha town, where there are 4 high schools.

In Cikha of Tonzang township, there were three deaths reported because of COVID-19 in the Indian-Myanmar border town, namely:

  1. Rev. Paul Gin Za Suan, 51, male
  2. Ciin Go Cing, 54, female
  3. Rev. Thawn Suan Thang, 70, male

The funeral services for the three victims of COVID-19 were held in the evening.

As of today since February 2021, there are 115 positive cases of COVID-19 in Cikha town, with five deaths. In Tonzang town, there are 91 positive cases with one death reported.

In Surkhua town of Hakha township, the military troops broke in houses, damaged property, looted belongings and ransacked all the rooms as well as threw food items including rice.

In Kalay, hundreds of residents staged anti-coup protests. In Kalay township, six village administrators submitted their resignation letter to the township administration head.

In Phuncawng village about six miles away from Aizawl of Mizoram State in India at about 6am, a truck accidentally crashed two houses where four families of CDMers from Myanmar stay, injuring eight persons. They were taken to a hospital in Aizawl.

In Hakha, an A4 letter of threat together with a fake explosive addressed to CDF members and families was posted in front of two houses. The letter sent by a group called ‘Nat Soe Kyi Mya’ (Khuachia in Hakha language, which means ‘evil spirit’) said that one female migrant worker was killed on 1 June while travelling between Gangaw and Hakha by CDF members and warned that the group knew details of CDF family members, addresses and movements. It also said that it was the first and last warning to those who give trouble to innocent people.

In Tamu of Kalay township, a 28-day-old child died from COVID-19 infection in the morning. Between 26 May and 3 June, the COVID-19 test results showed that there were over 171 positive cases in the Indian-Myanmar border town.

2 June 2021 – In Falam, Police Private Joshua went on strike, joining the CDM.

In Paletwa at about 7am, the military junta’s forces abducted Aik Aung Thiha and Aik John Nyian Lin Tun, both of them being Khumi youths, at their houses for no obvious reasons given.

In Shwe-aung-thar village on the Chin-Magway border near Mindat township, the military troops in two trucks arrived and occupied the monestary as their base.

In Tedim at about 9pm, there was a blast at the office of the township health department in Lawibual Ward, damaging the building with no casualties reported. In the same Ward, residents said that they heard several gunshots around 9pm.

In Kalay at Wesley Hospital, eight new cases of COVID-19 were detected among hospital staff. All of the staff, about 70, were put in quarantine and the hospital in lockdown.

In Chin State, there were 58 cases of COVID-19 confirmed between 31 May and 1 June, with 52 in Tonzang township and 6 in Falam township.

In Tamu, 21 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed.

In Falam, four new cases of COVID-9 were confirmed. At about 12:30pm, a 50-year-old woman died from COVID-19.

In Myaing of Pakokku township of Magway Region, four individuals – one identified as Laban who was on his mission to get food items for IDPs in Mindat township and was hoaxed and arrested in Moe Kaung Kin tea shop by plain-clothes soldiers who pretended to give donations for IDPs, another one who was an AGD bank staff and was arrested at his workplace by plain-clothes soldiers, the third one being a male who was arrested by soldiers in an ordinary car and the last one being the father of the male who went to meet with the plain-clothes soldiers to bail out his son – were arrested (to be verified and confirmed).

In Tamu town of Sagaing Region, the Kuki university students observed a one-minute silence in honour of L. Thong Hao Gin, 25, a police CDMer, who was killed in a firefight against the military junta’s forces in Nanphalung Myoma 13 Ward where six Tatmadaw soldiers were dead and five injured.

In Cikha town of Tonzang township, 33 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed.

In Paletwa, U Maung Thein was abducted by the Arakan Army for no obvious reasons while on his way to a funeral service.

In Cikha town of Tonzang township, entrances to the town were blocked for ten days to stop people from entering the Indian-Myanmar border town under the leadership of ZYA in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In Kalay near East See village at about 9pm, there was an exchange of firefight between the civilian resistance fighters and the military junta’s forces.

In Kalay township at 8pm, the military council announced the imposition of a ‘stay at home’ restriction starting from 4am on 3 June.

In Paletwa township, the township education department said that 9,509 out of over 30,000 children went to school. There are 382 government schools in the township. (Source: Chin World).

In Hakha, youths staged a ‘wreath’ rally in honour of the four fallen heroes, who were recently killed in the attacks against the military troops in Mindat and Kanpetlet townships. Wreaths were laid with messages reading ‘Rest in power, our fallen heroes. We will honor and remember you forever. We will never forget you. You sacrificed everything for our Chin people’.

In Rezua of Matupi township and Hnaring of Thantlang township, there were 22 police who went on strike joining the civil disobedience movement between 31 May and 2 June.

1 June 2021 – In Hakha, the Hakha University issued a letter demanding staff, who had gone on strike joing, to return any government’s property including cars and houses by 14 June 2021.

On the Hakha-Matupi road near Surkhua in Hakha township around 12noon, skirmishes between the Chinland Defense Force and the military troops broke out, leaving eight soldiers dead and at least five injured. The CDF said that the military troops based in Rakhine State were sent in as reinforcements towards Hakha via Paletwa township.

In Paletwa at about 4pm, U Sunny Aung, who was arrested on 29 May (see updates on 29 May below), was released.

In Kalay township, a letter signed by Hla Soe, the head of the administration, said that U Cin Suan Mung, administrative head of Mauklin village tracts, was allowed to resign from his current post for health issues.

In Tedim, scores of residents amid fear of crackdown and arrests stood in line for the ATM of the KBZ bank, which allowed a withdrawal of 200,000 Kyats per card.

In Falam, six new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the town, according to the General Hospital. The hospital, under the control of the military forces, announced that anyone was allowed for COVID-19 tests everyday from 10am to 11am.

In M’kuiimnu of Mindat township, 12 policemen and three GAD staff joined the civil disobedience movement.

In Tonzang, Falam, Thantlang, Hakha, Lailenpi, Tedim and Kalay towns, residents said that they didn’t see a single student going to school on the first day of schooling as planned by the military council.

In Pyidawta village of Kalay township, there are about 200 students going to school.

In Kanpetlet, the Chinland Defense Force announced that Salai Aung Ling and Salai Ling Shwe, 23, gave their lives while protecting civilians in the armed conflict in villages between the CDF and the military junta’s forces from 28 to 31 May 2021.

In Tedim, an anti-coup education protest was organized at a school in Lawibual Ward by sticking postcards and placards on the walls.

In Thantlang, the Thantlang Revolutionary Campaigner urged Sui Chin Par, of the GAD, to stop giving pressure to CMDers and persuading people to apply for vacant posts in the department.

In Aizawl, Mizoram State of India, Singer Benjamin Sum tested COVID-19 positive and has been isolated in a hospital. Sum fled to India as the military regime charged him with Section 505a (see updates on 9 April below).

In Kalay, hundreds of residents continued anti-coup protests walking along the main roads and lanes as they raised flags, banners and placards.

In Tonzang, 23 new cases of COVID-19 in Tonzang and 29 cases in Cikha were confirmed, making it 134 patients (67 males and 67 females) in total in the whole township.

In Falam, six new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, reaching the total number of patients to 10 who are being isolated in the hospital.

On the road between Thantlang and Hakha near Kio Luai’s farm, the military junta’s security forces established a new checkpoint after the Laipawnglung checkpoint was abandoned following recent firefights.

31 May 2021 – [Updates]The Chinland Defense Force announced the death of Salai Cung Peng Lian, a CDF member, who gave his life in the fight against the military dictatorship.

In Chin State, the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department dismissed seven staff from their current posts. They were U Za Ceu Mang in Hakha township, U Ni Thla Hu in Thantlang township, U Val Thang in Matupi township, U Bawi Ci Lian in Matupi township, Daw Thang Ma Him in Mindat district, U Chan Hlei in Matupi township and Daw Tha Tin Far at State-level office.

30 May 2021 – In Paletwa, U Kyaw Min was abducted at his home around 11:30pm at night by the Arakan Army for no obvious reasons.

29 May 2021 – [Updates] In Tonzang township and Tamu township, the military council imposed a ‘stay at home’ restriction.

22 May 2021 – [Updates] Police Private Bawi Sang Hmung submitted a letter of his joining the civil disobedience movement to the Hakha Police Forces.

20 May 2021 – [Updates] In Kalay, 39 staff of the Kalay Technological University were dismissed from their current posts for going on strike. It was followed after a few days by another letter targeting CDMers, demanding the immediate repayment of two-month salaries given in advance to the staff during the COVID-19 pandemic late last year. However, the letter mentioned that it was loaned to staff with no interest.

In Hakha, 232 staff of the Hakha University – which has been occupied by the military troops – were dismissed from their current posts for joining the civil disobedience movement.

9 May 2021 – In Kalay, Warrant Officer Hlawn Khup, of LID 228 based in Kalay, joined the civil disobedience movement.
