Delegation led by former US President to visit Burma
24 September 2013: Former US President Jimmy Carter, former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, and former Norwegian PM Gro Harlem Brundtland are to start a 3-day visit to Burma today.
The delegation led by Jimmy Carter make the first trip as a group on behalf of The Elders in an effort to support Burma’s democratic transition and encourage peace process between the government and ethnic armed groups.
The leaders are scheduled to hold private meetings with high-level officials in Burma’s government as well as other political leaders, religious leaders and civil society groups, including women’s organisations.
In the past, several members of The Elders had travelled to Burma including President Jimmy Carter in April 2013 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu in February 2013.
Formally launced in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 2007, The Elders is an independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights.#
