21 April 2026 — Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, leader of the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC), has invited all ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) to hold discussions by a deadline of 31 July.
The invitation, announced on 20 April during a Union Government meeting in Naypyitaw, is part of the junta’s outlined plans for peace efforts and other government activities to be conducted within the next 100 days.
The coup leader specified that the invitation is open to all EAOs, including groups that have signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) and those that have not.
He explicitly invited NCA signatory groups that have not participated in talks for the past five years, naming the Karen National Union (KNU), the Chin National Front (CNF), and the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF). Detailed announcements are expected to follow.
The renewed call for peace comes amid continued military operations and airstrikes by junta forces across ethnic regions, including Chin State. Conflict has intensified in areas like the Falam-Kalay front, where the SSPC has sustained casualties and resorted to frequent air and drone attacks.
Key resistance groups remain skeptical of the junta’s political overtures. The Chin National Front (CNF), one of the groups specifically invited, had already rejected the junta’s planned military-led Union Parliament in February.
Furthermore, the junta leader himself, Min Aung Hlaing, is currently facing a war crimes and crimes against humanity case filed by Timor-Leste in February.
The announcement of the peace efforts follows recent developments where SSPC leader Min Aung Hlaing was inaugurated as president on 10 April 2026, which was immediately followed by the constitution of the 11-member Union Advisory Council.
This new title, “President Min Aung Hlaing,” was also used in the reappointment of Dr. Vung Suan Thang as Chief Minister of Chin State on 18 April 2026. – Reporting by Ben
