18 March 2026 – The State Security and Peace Council (SSPC) authorities in Gangaw town began inspecting vehicles to enforce an odd–even license plate regulation, according to local sources.
Vehicles that do not follow the rule may face arrest or legal action.
Initial reports from Yaw Alinn Tan stated that the inspections began on 18 March. A joint team of the Myanmar military council members, police, traffic police, and other departmental officials carried out the inspections.
SSPC authorities introduced the regulation to reduce fuel consumption. Since 7 March, vehicles with even-numbered license plates operate only on even dates, while vehicles with odd-numbered plates operate only on odd dates.
A resident said inspection teams will check vehicles at town entry and exit gates, road intersections, and major roads. Drivers who violate the rule may face a fine of 20,000 kyats or up to one month in prison.
SSPC authorities also advised residents from nearby villages to check the regulations before entering the town.
The inspection teams include police, traffic police, General Administration Department staff, and Fire Services personnel. Authorities also conducted awareness sessions for government staff about the odd–even vehicle rule in recent days. – Reporting by Ben
