20 February 2026 – Residents of Hakha, the capital of Chin State, reported hearing multiple gunshots today near the location where the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) was holding a Chin National Day celebration.
The gunfire has caused panic in the town, leading to the immediate closure of many shops, according to a local resident who spoke to the Chinland Guardian.
One source indicated that SSPC soldiers opened fire in an attempt to shoot down a drone that was hovering over the government complex in Chin-Oo-Si Ward, where the event was being held.
“I was about to go to the shop to buy medicines for an urgent need but as I heard the shooting sounds, I went back quickly to my house,” a female resident told the Chinland Guardian, adding that only a few shops were open due to prior warnings. During the conversation, she remarked, “Oh now, this sound is loud. It looks like a bomb.”
She also said that there were heavy SSPC security guards across the town at almost every corner.
An unidentified man was reportedly shot dead near the Fire Department. Sources indicate that the body remains unexamined due to the danger of approaching the location.
The incident occurred as SSPC Union Minister for Border Affairs and for Ethnic Affairs, Lt-Gen Yar Pyae, was visiting Hakha. His visit, which coincided with the 78th Chin National Day, involved meeting with the state government cabinet and departmental staff to discuss regional security, development, and administrative continuity.
Lt-Gen Yar Pyae met with Chin State Chief Minister Dr. Vung Suan Thang and other officials. In his addresses, he urged civil servants to maintain professionalism and remain free from party politics, distinguishing it from national politics focused on “Our Three Main National Causes.”
The CDF-Hakha had previously issued a warning to the public in Hakha town, urging them not to participate in the SSPC-organized event.
The SSPC launches several airstrikes in Hakha and Falam townships today.#
