3 October 2025 – Four prominent Chin organizations in Malaysia such as the Alliance of Chin Refugees (ACR), the Chin Refugee Community – Malaysia (CRC), the Daai Community in Malaysia (DCM), and the FRO (Falam Refugee Organization) jointly hosted a two-day meeting on 1 and 2 October in Kuala Lumpur.
The gathering brought together international Chin organization leaders, local church leaders, and Chin community representatives to discuss urgent issues facing Chin refugees currently stranded in Malaysia, with particular focus on the recent reduction in support from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The primary objective of the consultation was to strategize and prepare solutions for the challenges arising from the decreased UNHCR assistance. Discussions also focused on agreements to be presented and further discussed with UNHCR in subsequent meetings.
Notable attendees included Mr. Jeremy Hoipangs from the United Kingdom and Dr. Ro Dinga from the United States, both of whom participated in person. Additionally, Mr. Elaisa Vahnie, CEO of BACI (Burmese American Community Institute); Mr. Van Kio from the Burma Advocacy Group (BAG); and Mr. Plato Van Rung Mang from Canada contributed to the discussions via online platforms.
The meeting highlighted the growing concerns within the Chin refugee community regarding their welfare and the need for concerted efforts to address the evolving humanitarian landscape.
Agreements reached during the consultation are expected to form the basis of renewed engagement with UNHCR to seek sustainable solutions for Chin refugees in Malaysia.
In Malaysia at present, there is an estimated population of over 95,000 Chin refugees.#
