Worry for Mizo students in Ukraine

06 March 2014: The government of Mizoram, India has raised concerns about Mizo students currently studying in Ukraine.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla last Tuesday urged protection of Mizo students in his official letters to Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid and Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi.

It is estimated that 30 to 40 Mizo students are now stranded in the ‘trouble-torn’ Ukraine and the Russian controlled Crimean peninsula, according to media reports.

Mr. Thanhawla said that their parents were ‘extremely worried’ and asked the two Ministers to keep updates on the situation through the Indian Embassy based in Ukraine.

India opened its embassy in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, in May 1992, according to the official website.#
