29 April 2026 — Strong winds have damaged several shelters at a refugee camp in Lunglei District, where refugees, mostly from Matupi township in Chin State, are currently taking refuge, according to camp sources.

The incident occurred around 12:00 pm on 28 April at the Thaizawl refugee camp. At least three shelters had their roofs blown off, while one house—occupied by an elderly woman—collapsed completely due to the intensity of the winds.

A camp leader said the winds were very strong and caused serious damage. Affected families have moved to stay temporarily with nearby relatives as repairs are not yet possible. Another shelter at a nearby camp in Lunglei was also damaged.

Since 27 April, parts of Mizoram have experienced continuous heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms, causing widespread damage to homes and leaving some people injured. Mizoram authorities have temporarily closed schools in response to the severe weather conditions.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma said in a social media post that the government would provide assistance to affected communities as quickly as possible, in line with established procedures.

He also directed all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to respond promptly to those in need. The Chief Minister expressed appreciation to the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and local communities for their support and urged residents to report any damage to the relevant zonal officials without delay. – Reporting by Ben
