2 Killed, 15 Injured in Car Accident in Chin State

09 November 2012: A vehicle carrying goods and passengers plunged about 300 feet into a gorge on the Indo-Burma border trade road No. 2 around 12noon yesterday, killing 2 and injuring 15 people.

The two passengers, a Burman and a Chin, died instantly when the accident took place near Haimual village of Tedim Township, Chin State bordering Mizoram State of India.

Lv. Vanlianthang said in his email: “A vehicle called ‘Shwenesat’ bound for Kalaymyo of Sagaing Division from Tio on the Indo-Burma border had an accident. Those injured are taken to hospital in Tedim town.”

Eight out of 15 injured are in critical conditions and all of them have been taken to General Hospital in Tedim town, according to the Chinland Post.

“Among the injured is a woman called Dawt Hlei Iang, who is in urgent need of operation but as there is no electricity in the town, she is told to wait until the electricity is back,” her family was quoted as saying.

As no one knew for sure when the electricity would be back, she was just suffering and no medical treatments including X-ray and operation could be carried out, according to the local from Tedim town.

The Indo-Burma border trade road No. 2 connecting Zokhuadar in India’s Mizoram State and Kalaymyo via Tedim of Chin State was reconstructed with the help of Indian government in 2003 after closures for years.

In another car accident taking place on the same road last week, a woman living near Tio river was killed and several others injured, according to Lv. Vanlianthang.
