Suu Kyi Dialogues with NLD Youths
29 June 2011: Pro-democracy leader Aung san Suu Kyi and the leadership of her National League for Democracy (NLD) on Tuesday held a discussion with Party youths from upper Burma in the former capital Rangoon.
The closed-door meeting was attended by about 100 NLD youth delegates from the six States and Divisions from upper Burma, amidst accusations that the victor of the 1990 elections has been alienating Burma’s youths.
Speaking to Chinland Guardian, a youth delegate from one of the ethnic States who participated in yesterday’s forum said that while no issues of particularly significant importance were discussed, the meeting provided a good opportunity for the youths to have a face-to-face dialogue with the popular leader.
“I was able to speak for a good 15 minutes to highlight some of the most serious issue of human rights concern specific to my State,” the youth delegate told Chinland Guardian.
In an apparent effort to dispel any doubts that the NLD was dismissing the importance of the role of the youths, Suu Kyi encouraged the youths to be proactive and not to rely only on ‘senior people’ making the decisions for them.
Meanwhile, the Burmese Minister of Home Affairs Maung Oo yesterday accused Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD leader U Aung Shwe of breaching the Burmese laws by holding unauthorized events, meeting with foreign dignitaries and producing unauthorized publications. Through the official state media The Mirror, Maung Oo warned against continuing with the ‘illegal acts,’ which ‘threaten the security and law and order of nation.’
A separate meeting with NLD youths from lower Burma is being held at the NLD Headquarters today.
