Christian Persecutions Raised In London Conference
18 April 2010: A Chin Christian activist yesterday spoke about ongoing repressions and persecutions facing Christians in Burma at Asian Christian Solidarity Conference held in London.
Mr. Cung Luai, who is based in Cardiff, Wales, said in his speech: “Being a Chin Christian is not easy in Burma. Hundred of Christian pastors, leaders and churches face various kind of repressive measures and persecutions in their daily lives under the ruling military regime. Please continue to pray for us because we need freedom of religion in our country.”
Other key speakers included Alan Craig, leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance and councillor in the London Borough of Newham; Anna Belle Bentham of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Laldawnsang Amlai from Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh; and other Christian pastors and leaders from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Laldawngsang Amlai, of Bawm group in Bangladesh, highlighted the plights of Christians and minority groups being discriminated, denied, ignored, tortured and persecuted in the indigenous areas. He also mentioned recent incidents where village houses, churches and temples were burnt down by Bengali settlers with direct help from army personnels.
One of the organisers, Br. James Peris, told the conference: “This is the time for all Christians to raise our voice against the persecutions and atrocities happening in all the Asian countries. This is the time for all of us to come together on one common platform to make one voice for our brothers and sisters who are suffering.”
The conference, attended by more than 30 people, was the first organised by All Christian Solidarity Concern based in the UK, aiming to create a platform for all Asian Christians, to forge unity and show solidarity, and give a wake-up call to the main Christian churches and groups in the UK.
