15 June 2026 – A 12-wheel cargo truck veered off the road and plunged into a ravine along the Matupi–Mindat road in Chin State on 14 June, after a section of the roadway collapsed following days of heavy rainfall.
According to local sources, the accident occurred on the morning of 14 June at a landslide-prone section of the road. The truck fell down a steep slope and sustained extensive damage.
Local media outlets such as the Matupi Times, citing residents at the scene, reported that the driver suffered injuries, including a neck injury, but remained conscious and was able to speak after the accident. He was later transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
The truck assistant escaped unharmed after leaving the vehicle to assess road conditions shortly before the incident occurred.
Residents said that several vehicles had successfully crossed the damaged section of the road earlier. However, when the cargo truck attempted to pass, the lower portion of the roadway collapsed, causing the vehicle to overturn and plunge into the ravine.
Recent heavy rainfall has disrupted transportation across the area and heightened the risk of landslides along key routes in southern Chin State.
Local residents and travellers have called on authorities to urgently repair the damaged section of the Matupi–Mindat road to ensure safe and reliable transportation for communities that depend on the route. – Reporting by Ben
