4 May 2026 – Extensive timber extraction has been reported in Paletwa Township, Chin State, particularly in the Shinglet Stream headwaters area near the upper Shwelaikwa village tract and along the India–Myanmar border, according to local ground sources.

According to reports from Khumi Media Group, local residents state that the Maraland Defence Force (MDF) and other affiliated groups have been heavily involved in logging operations since January 2026.

An estimated over 30,000 tons of timber are reported to have been extracted and transported to Saiha District in Mizoram State, India.

The logging activities are said to be concentrated in a forested watershed zone stretching from Shinglet Stream in Shwelaikwa village tract to the Lerri Stream area near the India–Myanmar border.

Locals report that timber is regularly transported across the border into Mizoram.

A resident who requested anonymity said, “They say MDF is coordinating the logging operations. Around 3–4 MDF personnel usually provide security at the sites. At times, other armed groups are also present. The AA is also active in the area, and Rakhine traders frequently transport goods through Saiha using trucks.”

Another local resident added, “The loggers are mostly from Hakha. We have seen more than 10 logging machines operating. The timber is transported from Khikhum village by Rakhine trucks toward Saiha. We have not seen border forces conducting inspections or taking action. It is difficult for us to speak openly about this.”
