29 April 2026 — The State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) has increased aerial surveillance over areas surrounding Matupi township in Chin State, raising concerns among residents over a possible escalation in military activity.

Local sources reported that reconnaissance aircraft have been flying daily in recent days, often remaining airborne for extended periods. Flights have been observed during both daytime and nighttime hours, including in poor weather conditions.

Initial reporting from the Matupi Times cited a local resident who said the aircraft’s frequent presence has forced communities to prepare bomb shelters and remain on high alert amid fears of possible airstrikes.

The intensified surveillance is occurring in areas currently controlled by Chin resistance groups, including the Chin Brotherhood and allied forces such as the Chin People’s Union/Chin People’s Army (CPU/CPA).

Observers noted that similar patterns of increased reconnaissance activity have preceded previous airstrikes in other parts of Chin State, contributing to growing anxiety among local communities.

On 23 April, the SSPC declared martial law and a state of emergency across several townships in Chin State, including Matupi, Kanpetlet, Thantlang, Paletwa, Tedim, Mindat, and Falam townships.

The heightened aerial activity has raised serious concerns over civilian safety, with residents urged to remain vigilant and prepared for potential airstrikes. – Reporting by Ben
