1 April 2026 – The Zomi Federal Union/People’s Defence Force-Zoland (ZFU/PDF-Zoland), mostly active in Tedim area, announced on Monday, 30 March, that it will offer a combination of military training and vocational education to young people involved in public defence operations.

The announcement was made during the group’s 5th Founding Anniversary celebration.

The ZFU/PDF-Zoland was formed to resist the military coup that overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in February 2021. It is one of many ethnic and local defence forces fighting for the establishment of a Federal Union based on principles of freedom, equality, justice, and self-determination.

The organization simultaneously addressed recent controversy surrounding its recruitment practices. On 24 March, the ZFU/PDF-Zoland issued a mandatory three-year military service announcement for all adults in Tedim and Tonzang townships, which are part of the broader Zogam region. This move drew criticism, particularly concerning the alleged recruitment of underage individuals.

In response to the criticism, the group emphasized its opposition to compulsory youth enlistment and stated its adherence to strict recruitment and conduct regulations designed to respect public rights and safety.

Furthermore, on 31 March, ZFU/PDF-Zoland announced the release of 14 youths, bringing the total number of individuals released under special exemption criteria to 20. The criteria for exemption include: being underage or a student wishing to return home; having a family member already serving; being mentally or physically unwell; or being an only son or daughter.

The group, however, noted that underage individuals who demonstrate a strong desire to serve may still be permitted to join.

The ZFU/PDF-Zoland continues its public defence operations and has appealed for sustained public support in its struggle for national liberation. – Reporting by Daniel
