16 March 2026 – Two displaced civilians, a mother and her daughter, were killed, and another family member was critically injured following the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) airstrike in northern Gangaw township, Magway Region, in the afternoon.
The incident occurred in the Kyaukgu area in the northern part of Gangaw township in the Yaw region of Magway Region, where military aircraft carried out an air attack on civilians who had been displaced by ongoing conflict.
According to a report by Yaw Alinn Tan, the airstrike took place at around 1:30 pm on 16 March when four jet fighter aircrafts from Tada-U Air Base dropped eight 300-pound bombs on the area without any reported clashes on the ground.
Two bombs reportedly fell and exploded near a temporary shelter used by a displaced farming family from Kan village. All four members of the family were injured in the blast.
A 50-year-old mother and her 13-year-old daughter died instantly. The father sustained severe injuries and is in critical condition. Another daughter, aged 20, was also seriously injured and may lose one of her legs due to the injuries.
Local sources said at least five other people in the Kyaukgu area may have been injured in the attack, while several temporary shelters and buildings were damaged or destroyed. However, communication difficulties in the area have made it hard to confirm the full details of the casualties.
In a separate incident on the same day, at around 3:40 pm, a jet fighter reportedly dropped a bomb near the border area between southern Htilin township and northern Mindat township. The bomb exploded in a forested area, and no casualties or damage were reported.
Local sources warned that although there are currently no ground clashes in the Yaw region, residents should remain alert to the risk of further airstrikes. – Reporting by Ben
