Burmese jumped to death during Malaysia crackdown
PENANG – 10 September 2013: A man identified as a Burmese national jumped to his death from a flat at Penang when his rented house was ambushed by Malaysian immigration officers targeting undocumented foreign workers.
The Burmese in his 20s was too scared, tried to escape the crackdown, and finally jumped down from his house on the 8th floor after finding no way to run.
Three of his Burmese roommates believed to be undocumented workers, too, managed to run away although they saw their friend who was lying dead on the street.
A local Chinese daily reported that the Burmese ‘illegal’ immigrant worked in a chicken rice shop during day time and a grilled fish shop at night.
The worker’s brother, who is a UNHCR registered refugee, was also present at the scene.
