24 February 2026 — Mizoram’s government, India, have completed 93 percent of biometric enrolment for Myanmar refugees sheltering in the state, with the remaining registrations expected to be completed soon.
State Home Minister K. Sapdanga said in the Assembly on Monday, 23 February, the biometric enrolment process, launched under the direction of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, has reached its final stage. He confirmed that as of 5 February, 93 percent of Myanmar refugees had been enrolled, and authorities are working to complete the remaining process as soon as possible.
According to official data, Mizoram is currently hosting 38,059 displaced persons, including refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as internally displaced persons from neighbouring Manipur. More than 28,000 Myanmar nationals form the largest group and are living across all 11 districts of the state.
About 2,300 refugees from Bangladesh are also sheltering in Mizoram, with around 13 percent enrolled in the biometric system so far.
The enrolment process began in late July 2025 through the Foreigners Identification Portal and biometric system. Officials said data collection in refugee camps has been easier, while reaching refugees living in rented homes has presented logistical challenges.
Technical issues and poor internet connectivity in remote areas also caused delays in some districts. Despite these challenges, authorities said they remain committed to completing biometric registration for all refugees.
Mizoram shares a long border with Myanmar, and many Myanmar nationals, mostly from Chin State, fled to the state following the military coup in February 2021 and the ongoing conflict. Officials added that efforts are ongoing to ensure all eligible refugees are registered. – Reporting by Ben
