Hakha, 30 January 2026 — A soldier from the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) discharged at least three rounds yesterday afternoon at a checkpoint in Hakha town, located between Kanbawza Bank and the Assembly of God Church.

The incident, which occurred around 2:00 pm, reportedly took place during an argument between the on-duty soldier and a local motorcyclist. The checkpoint was conducting surprise checks on passers-by.

No casualties or injuries were reported following the incident.

According to a local resident quoted by the Lungmili Post, the argument with the soldiers—which involved an elderly man—concerned vehicle drivers who were intoxicated.

A Hakha resident commented on the frequent use of force: “There was no need to fire those gunshots. The soldiers tend to use these tactics to threaten and intimidate people in the town. Occasionally, soldiers are under the influence of alcohol and behave aggressively towards the local community.”

This checkpoint has been the site of previous incidents, including the fatal shooting of a man by the then-SAC soldiers on 20 August 2025.#
