22 December 2025 — The State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) has implemented strict restrictions on cross-border travel and internal movement within Tamu township, Sagaing Region, citing necessary security measures in the lead-up to the scheduled 28 December elections.
The restrictions, which began yesterday, 21 December, and are slated to last over a week, include a complete prohibition on crossing the India–Myanmar border and severe limitations on movement inside the township.
Local sources confirm that border crossings were closed as of 21 December. Security personnel, including the Shanni Nationalities Army (SNA) and Pyusawhtee (a pro-SSPC militia), are reportedly enforcing a ‘shoot-on-sight’ policy for individuals violating the imposed movement restrictions.
Furthermore, SSPC authorities have announced a night curfew, prohibiting all movement between 8:00 pm and 4:00 am without explicit permission.
The sudden closure and travel limits have resulted in immediate and serious disruption to the livelihoods of daily wage earners and local traders who depend on movement to rural areas and cross-border commerce.
Residents report that restrictions put in place since the evening of 20 December have already severely impacted vegetable sellers and food traders reliant on local and cross-border access.
Residents further said security forces threatened action against anyone crossing the border, moving within the township without authorisation, or violating curfew hours during the restriction period. – Reporting by Ben
