Khumi to use ‘Chin’ for ethnicity in census

13 February 2014: A public conference organized in Sami town, Paletwa Township, Chin State by the Khumi Forum agreed that the term ‘Chin’ will be used for ethnicity in the forthcoming census.

They said that they would enter the national name ‘Chin’ rather than their tribal name ‘Khumi’ when filling up the forms prepared for the nationwide census taking scheduled for next month.

According to the Khumi Media Group, the people decided to choose Code 401 of ethnic groups categorized by Burma’s authorities that claim there are 135 national races in the country.

The conference welcomed and seconded resolutions reached by the Chin National Conference held in Hakha last November, one of which states that the term ‘Chin’ will be used as a national name.

It was attended by more than 100 Khumi leaders and representatives including Salai Khwe Yang MP.

The Khumi Forum said that it will organize other similar events in Rangoon and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 15 and 23 February respectively.#
