Suu Kyi to Celebrate 67th Birth Day in UK

22 May 2012: Burma’s National League for Democracy party leader Aung San Suu KYi will be celebrating her 67th birth day in the UK. News reports quoting the British Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed that the Nobel Peace Laureate will begin her week-long visit to the UK on June 18.

Born in 1945, Suu Kyi’s birth day falls on June 19.Married to the late British academic Dr. Michael Aris with whom she has two sons, the daughter of Burma’s independence hero has a family still living in the UK.

Downing Street has also confirmed that Suu Kyi will be addressing a joint session of the British Parliament during her first foreign trip in more than 20 years. The former political prisoner will also be visiting Norway to personally receive her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize.

It is unclear yet whether the newly elected Burmese parliamentarian will also be visiting the war-displaced populations in neighboring countries as part of that foreign trip, although her party has made ‘internal peace’ one of its central policy issues.
