Petrol Compound Burnt Down in Kalay Myo
10 January 2011: Massive fire broke out in BOC (Burma Oil Corporation) compound today, burning down one office building, one truck and two motorcycles around 4pm in Kalay Myo, Sagaing Division.
The raging blaze that lasted for more than an hour reportedly started while a truck carrying full of petrol was filling up the depot.
“We heard that the truck was transferring the petrol into the storage container using a pipe and suddenly fire broke out. Some people said that the truck was on fire as its engine was still so hot after travelling a long distance,” said a Kalay local.
No specific details have been known as to the cause of the burning.
Another local said the fire didn’t go spreading around other houses and there was no casualty reported.
Most of the petrol stations in Kalay Myo are closed following the incident and there have been speculations that the petrol price will skyrocket in the near future. Currently, one gallon of petrol costs 2,500 Kyats (2.50 USD) at the BOC stations.
