21 July 2026 – The military-controlled Union Parliament approved the removal of Falam and Tonzang townships in Chin State from the state of emergency, a significant shift in the administrative status of these two regions while the junta extended emergency rule for an additional 90 days across 58 other townships nationwide.

This parliamentary action follows the expiration of a 90-day emergency period initially declared by junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on 23 April 2026. That original order, issued under Section 412(a) of the Constitution, placed 60 townships under emergency status, ostensibly to curb “armed violence” and restore regional stability, peace, and the rule of law.

The lifting of restrictions in Falam and Tonzang marks a transition in the military’s strategy for these areas, following the regime’s successful offensive to recapture the towns earlier this year.

Before these operations, which utilized heavy airstrikes and ground forces throughout April and May, both townships were under the control of Chin resistance forces.

The continued application of emergency rule impacts a wide swath of the country, including five other townships in Chin State—Mindat, Kanpetlet, Matupi, Paletwa, and Thantlang—alongside various regions across eight other states and divisions.

The situation in Chin State remains volatile. Throughout 2026, the region has been defined by intense conflict, characterized by heavy military reliance on air power, including airstrikes in Falam that have previously damaged civilian homes and infrastructure.

The extension of emergency measures in 58 townships suggests that despite military efforts to consolidate territory, the junta continues to face significant challenges to its authority across the nation. – Reporting by Daniel
