13 May 2026 – A humanitarian and healthcare emergency has emerged in Tedim town, Chin State as medical personnel, including the highly regarded physician Dr. Ngo Zam Mung, have evacuated the town due to concerns over a potential military confrontation for its control.
The 100-bed Tedim General Hospital is now operating without specialized medical staff, leaving patients struggling to access care.
Dr. Ngo Zam Mung, who reportedly treated about 100 patients daily, was known for his skilled and compassionate care, especially among the elderly. A local resident lamented that his departure has caused “serious difficulties,” as he provided emotional support in addition to medical treatment.
Patients now face a difficult choice whether they would seek treatment in Tio area across the India-Myanmar border or travel to Kalay town in Sagaing Region. This choice is severely complicated by financial hardship, transportation difficulties, and acute security risks.
These travel challenges are exacerbated by the broader conflict in Chin State between military forces (SSPC) and local resistance groups. For instance, the Tonzang-Tedim road has been closed indefinitely due to escalating violence, making essential travel hazardous.
Local sources estimate that over half of Tedim town’s population, which numbers more than 10,000, has fled to safer areas. – Reporting by Daniel
