11 May 2026 — Myanmar nationals formed the overwhelming majority of foreign tourists visiting Mizoram in the 2025–2026 fiscal year, official data from the Mizoram Tourism Department shows.

Out of 14,558 foreign tourists recorded, 10,956 came from Myanmar — accounting for over 75% of all international arrivals. The United States ranked a distant second with 878 visitors, followed by smaller numbers from Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Israel.

The state welcomed more than 908,000 domestic and international tourists overall during the period — its highest annual figure in 17 years.

This marks a strong rebound and expansion, driven largely by improved connectivity, including the Bairabi-Sairang railway line inaugurated in 2025, better promotion of eco-tourism, and events calendars aimed at encouraging longer stays.

The dominance of Myanmar visitors reflects deep historical, ethnic, and cultural connections. Mizoram shares a porous 510-km border with Myanmar, and the Mizo people have close kinship with the Chin community across the frontier.

Many cross for family visits, religious sites (such as Rih lake), trade, or leisure, often under the Free Movement Regime that historically facilitated easy border movement up to 16 km without visas.

Officials are now focusing on “responsible tourism” to manage the influx while protecting the state’s environment, culture, and infrastructure. Initiatives include developing rural homestays, eco-resorts, and a year-round events calendar.

This surge positions Mizoram as one of the Northeast’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, highlighting both its natural attractions and enduring people-to-people links with Myanmar. – Reporting by Ben
