28 April 2026 — Residents in Paletwa township, Chin State, are increasingly concerned about the risk of forced recruitment by armed groups operating in the area, according to local sources.

Paletwa is currently under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), while Chinland Council, such as Chinland Defence Force-Paletwa (CDF) and the Chin National Army (CNA), were active in the surrounding areas.

The local sources initially state that the presence of multiple armed actors has heightened fears of being detained or recruited.

“Even when travelling between villages, there is a risk of being stopped and taken. People are afraid of both sides,” a resident said. “Recruitment is happening from different groups, and many who are taken are not released.”

The restrictions on movement have become stricter in recent months. In December 2025, CDF-Paletwa announced limits on travel outside the township for adults, except for health and education purposes, to encourage participation in local defence.

Paletwa has experienced ongoing conflict since late 2023, when the AA launched an offensive against military forces and later took control of the township in January 2024.

The situation remains tense, with civilians facing increasing risks and limited freedom of movement, raising concerns over their safety and access to essential services. – Reporting by Ben
