21 April 2026 — The body of Mr. Pau Lam Kim, a young Chin national who died while traveling an irregular route to Malaysia for work, has not yet been released by Thai authorities, nearly two weeks after his death.
Meanwhile, his three companions remain in Thai detention.
Mr. Pau Lam Kim, 19, a resident of Tuivial village in Tedim township, Chin State, died on 11 April after reportedly suffocating in an overcrowded vehicle en route to Malaysia.
Despite the location of his body being known, Thai authorities have not permitted its release or allowed photographs to be taken.
Legal efforts are ongoing to repatriate his remains to Yangon, coordinated by relatives in Malaysia and the ZAM Sia Tuangpu group. Further developments are expected following discussions scheduled for 22 April.
The group of four—Pau Lam Kim (deceased), Mr. Cin Pia Nang, Mr. Kap Lian Kim, and Mr. Khai Kim Sing—left Myanmar on 8 April. They were described as close friends from Tedim township, united by a “brother-like bond”.
Upon learning of Pau Lam Kim’s death, one of his companions, Mr. Kap Lian Kim, lost consciousness. Thai police rushed him to a hospital, where he recovered after receiving medical treatment. He has since been discharged and is now in detention alongside the other two surviving individuals.
Authorities have released no further details regarding the case, and the three remain in custody as of 21 April.
This tragic incident underscores the increasing peril faced by young people in Chin State, Myanmar, who are undertaking dangerous, irregular cross-border journeys to Thailand and Malaysia in search of employment.
The influx of migrants has grown significantly since the 2021 military takeover by the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military. The dangers of this route include severe overcrowding in transport vehicles, leading to poor ventilation and breathing difficulties, which was reportedly the cause of Mr. Pau Lam Kim’s death.
Current estimates suggest approximately 90,000 Chin refugees reside in Malaysia following the 2021 military coup. – Reporting by Daniel
